Motherhood is one of the most important things that women from time immemorial have had to do. It is, in fact, so important that the entire human race would not be able to survive if it did not have the care that only mothers can give. The power of motherhood is so great that children cannot grow up normally without the presence of their mothers in life. This is the reason why the institution of motherhood is extremely important in the society since it enable the proper development of children as well as stability in the family. However, with the advent of the modern world, the role of the mother in the lives of her children has come to diminish, especially with the empowerment of women and their taking up of roles, which were previously reserved for men. The modern world has brought about plenty of challenges to motherhood, and some of these challenges tend to revolve around the fact that mothers are either working fulltime, or that they are going to college to further their education. While in previous generations the chances of couples divorcing were extremely slim, in the contemporary one, it has become commonplace, with many marriages falling apart in very short times. When this happens, it has become the norm for mothers to be given full custody of their children, which has led to the burden of the raising of children to become solely the domain of the mother. This situation has become extremely difficult especially when one considers that many mothers have to balance either work or school with the raising of their children; something which is becoming extremely difficult to achieve especially for those families that need an income. Today, mothers are faced with the task of not only raising their children, but also their fulfilling their obligations to their employers in order to earn an income. This raises the need for mothers to balance their work and family life. In order to achieve this, many mothers have looked for alternatives, which will not only enable them to work effectively, but also be able to spend time with their children. One of the ways that many mothers seem to be adopting is that of working from home. Many mothers have chosen to telecommute and this has ensured that they are able to spend more time at home working during the time when they would have been commuting to work. This has enabled them to get rid of work faster so that when their children come home from school, they find their mothers free to spend valuable time with them. Working mothers have also taken to using one calendar for all of their appointments so that they are not able to miss any appointments either for work of for activities, which they have to do with their children. An example of this is when a mother has an appointment with her boss at 2 p.m. on Monday and her son’s basketball game at 4 p.m. on the same day. In order to ensure that she is able to keep both appointments, the best thing for such a mother to do would be to put both appointments in the same calendar. In this way, she can be able to balance both of her obligations with no trouble at all. The best way for a mother to balance her work and children is to ensure that her children are the priority (Bianchi 363). This can be done when she devotes all of the free time she has to making sure that she spends it with her children. This not only strengthens the bonds of family, but is also helps a mother get to know her children better. Motherhood is one of the most difficult things that those who find themselves in such a situation have to undergo. Despite this, it is a duty that many mothers tend to take very seriously, especially when one considers the sacrifices that many mothers have to make for the sake of their children. Among some of the greatest sacrifices that mothers have to make in this age is that of giving up their careers for the sole purpose of getting to raise their children themselves. This is indeed a great sacrifice, especially when one considers that this mother may have given up a career that was both challenging and fulfilling, as well as one that made her happy (Dalla et al 392). Such a sacrifice should be recognized and appreciated by her children but this is often not the case. Motherhood is a position that lacks any appreciation and mothers have to make such sacrifices as their time, energy and whatever other resources they have to ensure that the welfare of their children is well taken care of. One has to admit that the efforts that many mothers make, however great, are often taken for granted by their children, who view such efforts as being more of a right rather than a privilege. Despite all these, many mothers tend not to complain and in fact, many of them often seem to be more determined to ensure that they do their best for the sake of their children. Motherhood is a choice that, once made, may last for the rest of a mother’s life because motherhood does not end when children grow up and leave home, but continues because these children will often come to their mother for advice concerning how to conduct their own lives. Motherhood is one of the most difficult duties, which one can undergo, and this, coupled with a mother who is going to college, if not managed well can become a disaster. Despite this, quite a large number of mothers often make the decision to go to college while at the same time raising their children. This is indeed an immense task and it needs plenty of dedication on the part of the mother in order to make it work. One of the most important steps that a mother can take is to set aside time for spending with her children as well as time to study. A clear timetable of the activities that a mother wishes to conduct will ensure that she is able to balance her study time with that of raising her children. A mother who is studying should ensure that she does not put off any work that she is given at school in preference for spending time with her children. Instead, she should stick to a tight and balanced schedule, which will ensure that she is not only able to fulfill her maternal duties, but also create a situation where she is able to work on her assignments and submit them on time. It is extremely important for a schooling mother to ensure that she communicates freely with her family as well as her professors so that these people can know of her situation and help her adjust so that she can be successful in her tasks. In conclusion, as we have seen above, motherhood is one of the most important duties that many women have to undertake because it is the foundation upon which society is based. However, despite being mothers, women also have to work and go to school in order to provide for their families as well as to be able to improve themselves through attaining an education. Motherhood is an institution that demands great sacrifices from those involved in it because without such sacrifices, then all would result in failure. Therefore, it has become necessary for mothers to find a balance between their work and school life and that of their families so that they can excel in both. Works Cited Bianchi, Suzanne M.
