Boxing is one of the most brutal sports, and the author captures this by using verbs such as "murderous," "primitive," and "terrifying." The verbs that she uses do show that the piece is more complex and academic than most sports writings.

For most people boxing is a sport where two people beat the crap out of each other for the sake of it. However, the author builds up a scenario that makes it sound like boxers are animals fighting to the death. Joyce Carol Oates paints a picture of two men slugging it out until they cannot stand no more.
