11 February Summary and analysis: Stories adrift is a short story based on one day in a taxi driver’s life. The story ends at the same point from which it begins. The man driving the taxi is named Julian and he is enraged at seven at night due to the hectic and gruel routine of a driver that he lives every day. The story contemplates the life of a taxi driver in a different, riveting, and attractive manner leaving the reader absolutely marveled at the twists and turns which could be encountered by a man in a single day.
How Julian thinks of his passengers, how he reacts to little emotions emanating from them, and how the constantly changing environment inside his car sends thrills of jolts or stillness inside himself are enchantingly explored by the author. First passenger in Julian’s car is a female professor whom he keeps checking out from his rearview window. After dropping her at her destination, the next passenger taken by him is a man with whom he talks of soccer and politics. Next, a couple gets into his taxi which directs him to wait for them for an hour after dropping them at a place.
Julian uses this time to have a snack for a lunch and begins to think about his own love and similar intimate encounter he had with a girlfriend after dropping the couple to its destination. Finally in the night he meets his last passenger who is a whining depressed stripper and after dropping her off, he sets off to his own place at seven.
