Download file to see previous pages Moreover, I reviewed the historical setting of the novel, so that I can further immerse myself into the actual context of the writer. As a feminist of the 1980s, Atwood’s surroundings have shaped her values, attitudes and practices as a woman and as a writer. Finally, I tried to recapture Atwood’s writing style, which is direct and yet full of symbolism. Her novel is like a poem, where every word, at least for me, matters to the characters, scenes, themes or the plot. Thus, for the final scenes, I imagined to be Offred. I am her, writing in awe and fear for the future. Her surroundings and the people around are new and old. They are her friends. They are her allies. And the next and only viable step is nothing less than- a Revolution.
I wake up and sit on the bed, trying to remember what happened. I am in a small room, a den maybe. But no, there are two windows at the side. The shutters are drawn down. Sunlight wants to penetrate the stillness of the room. Inside the room are a wooden desk and a wooden chair. Two chairs, actually. The desk gives something away, a sign of hope? It is Victorian of some sort, but unvarnished. The chairs look the ordinary ones in the centers I have been. Sturdy, manically sturdy.
I close my eyes to think. What happened last night? What happened to the Commander and his Wife? Did they call someone to verify the truth about these men who took me? I touch my forehead with my right hand, thinking, probing, feeling feverish. The two men frisk me away, as if every second in the Commander’s house is dangerous and I find myself galloping to the black van. Then darkness envelops me. Something on my nose and mouth sting my consciousness and I know I must sleep.
Now it is morning and yet it feels like another night for me. I feel shrouded in darkness, until I realize that the redness is all gone. I am no longer red outside.
