Rhetorical Analysis Summary Holly Wren Spaulding in her article, “In Defense of Darkness” observes the influence of darkness, real darkness which is not affected by light. In her argument, she explains the ways in which lively perspectives of life are brought up by the nighttime. She further explains how nighttime connects with others. In her observation, she condemns the rising effort for illuminating the world. She argues against the deeply engrained and uncritical tradition of keeping the lights on.

Spaulding uses anecdotes and personal experiences to support her arguments. She asks to our prolonged unfulfilled desire for calm. She describes the moment of discovery and reflection in lush detail through her testimony about noiseless small boat ride across the lake. According to her personal testimony petty consumer life and isolation characterizes the daily mainstream life while darkness is distinguished by curative and even inspiring life. She raises her argument with general point regarding modern society.

She describes our recent lives is define by the electrical lights. Such characterization put her readers and her argument yet- in an epic story of the human kind. According to her, she and her readers are described as “We modern, industrial, technological homo sapiens,” this sets us in a separate type which is also in the most popular human story, and this desire for separate type in order to understand ourselves in proper context with remaining world, is a primary part of the argument of Spaulding (Mauk & Metz 103).

However, using anecdotes, effective comparison and personal experiences Spaulding leads her readers to logically infer that darkness gives birth to the vital dimension of life.Work CitedMauk, John & Metz, John. “Inventing Arguments, Brief.” Cengage Learning, 2012. Print.
