By this, he means that they should not lose hope. He believes that they should keep going. Despite this, he still doubts if they shall make it. He plans that in case they are caught by bad people, he will kill the boy to save him from torture. In their current world, there seems to be no humanity or compassion left. Some bad people kill and eat others to survive. The man and the boy are different; they still have some humanity left in them and hope that they will get to a better world ahead.

They have hope that at the coast, good people still exist. So they travel for days heading to the coast and the encounters they meet on the way are many. Despite this, they manage to make it to the coast, where humanity still exists. The man, unfortunately, dies when they reach the coast but the boy is safe, he has managed to carry the fire. A compassionate family finds the boy and takes him in and the book ends here.
