They blame Etienne for failure of the strike and Souvarine entraps him in the shafts of one of the pits. Etienne is rescued, fired and later goes to live in Paris (Richard, p.60).
This story is an imagery of light and darkness whereby light symbolizes hope of the people to get rescued from the harsh working conditions in the mines. This happens after Etienne and Souvarine incite the workers to do it so as to be offered better working conditions which may consequently improve their living style. They go on riot, but actually a portion of the workers opposed the strike since they can not get another source of income in order to earn a living (Richard, p.108). They are doing this so as to bring their own redemption forth from the cruel yokes of poor working conditions.
When the strike backfires, it is an evidence of darkness in the workers lives in the mines. They are forced to go back to work and suffer in the endless darkness of oppression and strenuous conditions in the mines.
