It opens with the knowledge that the hired hand, Silas, has returned “home” to die. His associates think he should return to his rich brother but he is comfortable with the old farm couple who have raised him. Frost defines home in two different ways. At first Warren says:
Silas can be adjusted in both the definitions of home, although Warren thinks he does not deserve to stay there. When the moment of truth arrives, it is too late because Silas is dead. Warren’s wife told him not to mock him since Silas had bigger plans of helping Warren on the farm.
The perspective of home is presented differently by Hughes in the poem, “Ballad of a Landlord.” The house is called “land” in the poem. This land is more of a possession than a home. It belongs to the landlord and the Hughes is portraying a typical landlord-tenant relationship in the poem. There is a stroke of humor in the poem as it highlights the list of troubles that the landlord has caused the tenant. Readers discover the identity on the tenant towards the end of the poem, to be black. This gives a twist to the whole meaning of home. A “negro” already suffered because of his color. Now, the place where he lives is also making him miserable. There is a leak in his roof, which he has been reminding the landlord for the past whole week. The door steps are broken and he is being constantly threatened for having no electricity if he does not pay his bills.
In Sherman Alexie’s short story, “What you pawn I will redeem” the narrator Jackson has a home one day and the next day he is homeless. The narrator drifts away from his present where he has no home and money. Things were normal until Jackson flunked from college.
