BU supplement (Jan.2) – Why BU? What special characteristic of BU attracted you? (750 characters) o Teachers teach their with love and care. Every single one of them is respected in their own fields and they teach because they want to help students, rather than the greed for money. Boston University tends to consistently develop its programs and facilities to fit its students’ needs and comforts. Boston University accepts students from different origins and racial backgrounds so that everyone can have an opportunity to share and experience different cultures of the world. Another key unique feature that distinguishes Boston University from other universities is the fact that it harbors the needs of the student through exploration rather than strict textbook methodologies. As a student, I feel that I learn best when I test the theories that I have studied through textbooks. – BU attracts students from more countries than are represented in the United Nations. Our global presence and reputation are important and are reflected in the perspectives, opinions, and experiences of our students. Why is this type of environment important to you? (500 words, 5000 characters) o As an international student, I have decided to study abroad to broaden my view and understanding of the world. Since I have experienced education systems in Korea, as well as United States, I am clearly aware of the differences between them. In Korea, students are forced to study while competing with their fellow students. After school, every single student is forced to attend afternoon study sessions until 12:00 am. This ruthless and yet systematic approach of education mechanizes students and teaches them only how to study, rather than coupling education with the knowledge of how to live like a good citizen in the society. All they learn in the school is how to become an efficient “student”. Due to this reason, they forget how to think creatively and react quickly to rapidly changing situations. As one of these students, I realized that learning under this environment would shrink my view and keep me away from being myself. Boston University’s norm of attracting students from different ethnical and racial backgrounds will surely set up a satisfactory learning environment that will guide me throughout my college career. A variety of arguments and opinions will help me understand different perspectives and contribute in my growth. NYU supplement (Jan.1) - Why NYU? (1500 Characters) o Undoubtedly, New York University is a prestigious university that focuses on the needs of its students and attempts to elevate their learning curve through careful nurture, education and providing them with resources. One of the key unique features that distinguish it from other universities is the fact that it harbors the needs of the student through exploration rather than strict textbook methodologies. As a student, I feel that I learn best when I test the theories that I have studied through textbooks. Furthermore, the management department in New York University gives its students a very comprehensive approach towards embedding the core principles of management. Its dedication to outstanding research and development is critical towards providing the key components to its students that truly opens new perspectives for the students. Truly, it will give me the true essence of the culture of Corporate America that is drastically lacking in Korea. Furthermore, while I was working as an interpreter for 2011 IAAF World Championship, I gave a tour to an American journalist and he happened to be an alumnus of New York University. In the middle of the conversation, I told him that I was a high school senior who was applying at New York University for a degree in business. He reaffirmed my belief that NYU would be the right school for me. - Describe an academic area of interest. Share your experience that led you to this decision (1500 Characters) o Long before I was born, my family used to be a part of the higher and wealthier class of the society. My grandfather was the president of a successful trading company and it was due to his stature that my mother and her siblings got a chance to live an affluent life. However, one day a boat with a load of important commodities sank while crossing the ocean. His company suffered great losses and he became bankrupt in a matter of a few years. My grandfather had to go through hardships beyond description. His struggle started after I was born, so I was able to observe what he had to go through. He had to start his life from scratch. Looking at him struggling through hardships, physically and mentally, I decided to build up my own company and become as successful as my grandfather was. I wanted to show him that his struggle was not futile and that his earlier stature was not forgotten. I have decided to take up business and management as my major so that I can make the right decisions at the right time to lead my company towards success. Ever since I have found out about that incident, it has been my dream to establish a very successful company. I am certain that studying at New York University can provide me the tremendous experience and guidance to help me achieve my goal. - What intrigues you?
