Then I shifted to America to reside with my mother. Both of my parents have remarried - my father even has a daughter with his new wife - they have families of their own. I feel like an outsider though I do try my best to mingle with them. What Flavia Weedn says in Forever is true: “Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same”. I am not the same.

When I was fifteen years old, more changes occurred in my life as I shifted to America. Being in a new country with my mother but not having my father’s company with me was very hard. I barely knew any English so communication with others was strained. I tried my best to overcome the bridge though. For two years I worked day and night trying to improve my English. I followed Charles Simmons’ advice to “Never go backward. Attempt, and do it with all your might. Determination is power”, from being an ESL student I turned to be a part of the AP English Literature class. My perseverance bore fruit but I still found the English section of my SAT a trifle difficult.

With the upheavals in my life, I think it is only natural that I was very shy as a child. I was a quiet, well-behaved one sitting in the corner. As I grew older and my personality developed, my confidence grew. I took Ralph Waldo Emerson’s saying to heart and “Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you”. I became very active in school activities, opening my clubs and volunteering for community services. I was even employed at various workplaces during this period. It was great as I believe I have really good communicative skills and I enjoyed it all a lot.

Despite the problems, I have faced – or maybe because of them – I wish to be a doctor when I grow older. I realized I wanted to study medicine when my grandfather died because of heart disease. I want to help out other people, and save lives. I am aware it will not be an easy task, but I am willing to work for it and make my dream come true.

I feel I am quite independent to make my own decisions. This must be because I do not have two parents around me to guide me all the time since they separated when I was quite young. But I do know that I cannot pass my whole life wishing things to be the way they are not. I know I have to move on and make my own life, live my own life and I am working on it too. As Albert Einstein says: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle”.
