Intrinsic Motivation and Personal Drive My academic journey has been fully of intrigues, disappointments as well as successes. It has been a journey of happiness as well as challenges which I had to come across and which I had to overcome. Learning has always been an interest for me and I have always been eager to learn new things. One of the academic memories which I cherish the most is my history lessons in high school. I liked learning about the various histories of the world so much that I had to do extra research beyond the requirements of the curriculum.

While most of the other students did not enjoy the history classes, I was always excited for the class, always waiting for a new topic to be introduced. This was inspired by my deep desire to understand the human society and how it has evolved over the course of history. My love for history was a big boost to my performance in history and this endeared me to my history teacher. As a result, my teacher used to give me extra sources of information and encouraged me to learn more. While I knew I did not want to study history at advanced level because I did not intend to take this as my career, I always dedicated my resources as much as possible to learning history.

English was also my other love and I always liked to read as much as possible. I was highly obsessed with grammar as well as creative writing. When I was growing up, I was always reading fiction novels from all kinds of authors. I read novels from all times in history such as those by Aloysius Horn, which taught me some of archaic English words which I liked using in my informal writings. My English teacher was also as supportive as my history teacher and this made it easier for me to navigate through my academics.

Like I have already said, I also had to deal with a number of challenges as I was navigating through my education. One of this was with my chemistry lessons. This started when I happened to miss one of the most important topics in the subject and that led to me having problems with the successful topics in the same subject. This made my study in this subject harder. My chemistry teacher knew I was definitely doing better in all the other subjects and thought I was just not interested in her subject and this led to some misunderstandings between me and her.

She could not be convinced that I was doing my best. Although I was way above average in the subject, she expected more from me because I was doing much better in the other subjects. I really did not like this kind of scenario especially because she started pointing out that I was not serious about her subject because she was a lady. This was hurtful because I always study for myself and not to please or displease my teachers. Her belief that the reason I was not doing very well in her subject was because I despised her led to her being less supportive and I received less support from her.

This led to me having more issues in the subject. I’ve always believed that the best things and individual could ever posses is the personal drive for success (Demerath 87). This is the best tool of success and anyone with it can get anywhere they want to go. There is however one main issue I have with this and this is the fact that most students don’t have the personal drive to master whatever they study in school. I have a personal drive to succeed in my education and especially in my English lessons and I believe this will come in handy in my academics as it has in the past.

My main reason for wanting to study English at Irvine Valley College is to be able to master the art of language. I always feel that I need to be better in language. I am more interested in learning the mechanics of language because I intent to master the use of language in communication. I find it as a very powerful tool and I have a deep desire to get mastery of the language. I see language as both an art as well as a science. As I study language, the two main things I desire to master the most is grammar as well as creative writing.

I believe that creative writing can be a very good tool which can help in making the world a better place and this is what I intend to do. Works Cited Demerath, Peter.
