Download file to see previous pages Pro-humor vs. pro-informative vantage point The Blackwater chronicle is a comical book that humorously and to some extent realistically narrates the expedition events. In this essay, I consider the weight of humor to surmount the realistic retelling of the events. This humorous treatment of a wilderness exploration makes plentiful use of witty fictional devices and conventional allusions more in the vein of 18th-century writers than the journalistic approach of Kennedy’s 19th-century generation. Humorously, Kennedy and Strother describe the journey as enjoyable yet that is not the case since no direct routes are available. By quote he says “And then, what exhilaration of spirit is felt by you as you roll smoothly along at the rate of ten miles an hour, your horses scarcely stretching a trace”. This quote tends to imply that the journey was smooth though speed taken was low. In addition, the path available was in between the daggling cliffs and the deep gorge, thousands feet to the stream (Kennedy, Strother 12). This was a place of keen movement and any careless maneuver could result in fatalities. The image of the expedition as created by the writer is humorously smooth even though it might not mirror the truth. This frequently humorous and always fascinating narration reveals Kennedy's journey into a new territory. The Blackwater chronicle gives Kennedy’s writing a new perspective of adventure while basing many of his arguments on humor. In chapter 2, the stout gentlemen as the author refers to them humorously make a vow before departing for the journey in a unique way.
“.., that we made our rendezvous:-

...
ous:- “And Wat of Harden came thither amain, And thither came John of Thirlestane, And thither came William of Deloraine”- and all the rest of us- men, dogs, and horses.” The declaration at the departure time is one of the humorous flows of the chronicle as the men proceed (Kennedy, Strother 56-122). The chapter develops in a humorous manner as the five not six gentlemen describe themselves along the way. The gentlemen compares their journey to Caesar’s depredations encounter and suppose that he would have enjoyed theirs compared to his encounters. In chapter 3 of the book, the gentlemen describe their meanders in a joking manner as the say… “The streams, sometimes crossing our path, and sometimes flowing on by our side-seeming to go with us whichever way we go… “. This is a sarcastic means of portraying the journey and adventure. Throughout the journey the gentlemen use personification to describe their encounters and make the description more humorous. The humorous attribute of the Blackwater chronicle is not only based on the expedition events but the characters that are sarcastic all throughout the book. The character nature makes the expedition events more humorous compared to account of the event. This is why I support the pro-humor approach of analyzing the book as compared to pro-informative. In chapter six, Mr. Towers describes the environment sarcastically which leaves Triptolemus exclaiming and the rest wondering. These incidents where one of the gentlemen describes their journey humorously is all through the book. Mr. Todd describes the wild animals within the mountain in a human manner though he knows the stories are true and practical. He says, “ May the devil roast my light and livers, gentlemen, if I don’t begin to believe you really ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
