Song Analysis The Cranberries, an Irish band, launched a hit song under the Zombie, which was themed on protest. The song and its video got released in September 1994 and leaded the album “No Need to Argue”. The hit single, Zombie was the composition of their vocalist Dolores O’Riordan and topped the music charts in German, Belgium, Australia, and Denmark. Video of the song was really commendable and distinguished by the vocalist appearing in front of the cross in gold make up. In 1995, they won Europe MTV Music Award.

Moreover, the song was even featured in a 1997 Australian movie “Blackrock”, and in 2008, a movie called “Battle of Bones” had a scene, which showed a woman performing Zombie on piano. Hence, the song went places and did really well in the industry (Coyle). Zombie thundering guitars sounded worldwide and The Cranberries were there “in your head” with the chorus, so insidious that quickly became a success. Dolores could not imagine that millions of fans would pursue and harvested the song around the globe.

Hence, The Cranberries in 1995 were found in an enviable position, sitting on top of the pop chart, but also in a situation that they had no experience to be in such a scenario. Background of the song is really different, as we know it is an Irish group, so we can deduce that they experienced the problem of IRA terrorism in a way much closer than other did. This made The Cranberries, along with U2, one of the few groups that dared to approach the Irish reality from their lyrics. However, the first question one would ask is that what meaning does the song conveys by the title “Zombie”.

To understand this notion and the song, we need to recognize the background behind the thought of creation of this song. Zombie was written in 1993 as a result of news which impact Dolores O'Riordan, the singer and writer of the band. There was a ruthless IRA bombing that perpetrated on March 20 1993 at London Borough of Warrington, as a result of this attack two children died while shopping in a mall. Hence, Warrington event was undoubtedly the spark that triggered the rage which Dolores hiding inside.

Zombie spoke about the problem of violence; at first it highlights that why one may wonder what drives people to kill their fellows in an impersonal, indiscriminate way. However, in the closing phase of the song you end up getting used to the sound of bombs and comment the news. Moreover, musically, the song gives a historical feel, as arrangements that guitarist made were more free and expressive than ever. It reminiscences the Irish folk music and spiritual aspects are especially evident in songs.

The song also has a semi-ecclesiastical choir feel attached in the music and the climax rustic contrast with the grunge sounds where the drums and guitars share the limelight with the vocals. Furthermore, The Cranberries song, Zombie, used communication skills involved in music that was criticizing or trying to send a message to the public. However, the results were much higher than expected, as the song reached international success which could not be expected from a group that almost was starting.

Zombie, as we understand, is the feeling of helplessness caused by a brutal murder, entirely without justification. Majority of civilians died which was the result of a fight in which they were not even involved. The crimes hit in their head, stunning and making people feel like real zombies walking. However, there are lots of ambiguities emerging with the song. Lots of confused ideas are recited by Dolores O'Riordan and without them, it would be hard to obtain clear explanations. Vocalist highlights that “I never thought I would write things like that, because I used to believe that I would end up getting into trouble”.

Dolores is quite clear, that the result of the song fears her into trouble. As highlighted, the song portrays the statement that “I do not care about England or Ireland, Catholicism or Protestantism. At the end of the day the only thing I care about is the fact that innocent people have been hurt”. It's a subtle way of explaining that all they had to say what Cranberries said in the song, which was inspired by a moment of rage. In conclusion, it gets highlighted that one can still say Zombie has great acceptance among critics and audiences for the epic gesture and the invitation to peace which song communicates.

Zombie opened one of the best albums of Cranberries, an album where great drama is interspersed with the defendant that transmits spirituality. Also, Zombie remained at number one on the charts for months. Europe and North America felt its chorus in a humming sound by millions of young people. Hence, one can highlight that beyond the success of Zombie is the hidden value provided to the song by its catchy chorus. Work Cited Coyle, Rebecca.
