There relatively high mass is regarded for their desirable acoustic and thermal properties. Affordability is another feature that makes the clay bricks very much desirable as a civil engineering material. Once used in construction, clay bricks do not require maintenance and possess high durability and load-bearing capacity as well.

The clay bricks are to be used in all the walls of the art gallery i.e. the partition as well as the load-bearing walls. The ability of the clay bricks to support suspended floors in addition to the roof and walls in the story above can be utilized in the walls of the ground floor particularly the walls of the entrance hall and the lobby which is acting as load-bearing walls. The windows and doors can easily be incorporated in the clay brick walls. Most commercially available doors and windows are manufactured to be compatible with clay brickwork and the same is the case with the proposed design of the windows and doors in the art gallery building that is the cavity construction.

The environment friendliness of clay is also justified. Clay brick manufacturer uses the source of energy which is non-renewable but the investment of embodied energy is repaid by the longevity of the material. The buildings constructed through clay bricks have long lives, low maintenance requirements and thus low maintenance costs. The clay bricks are highly recyclable in nature thus it is a sustainable form of construction. Clay bricks can be reclaimed for re-use when a building is demolished. Brick ballast can also be made from the used bricks which can be used in paths and road surfaces.
The use of clay bricks in the walls of the lobby and the entrance hall is very useful as the clay bricks provide excellent sound insulation, particularly for low-frequency noises. The specific requirements for sound attenuation can be satisfied by two leaves of 110 mm clay brick masonry with a cavity of 50 mm between leaves and 13 mm cement render on each outside surface. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

In addition, glass is very similar to a slowly moving liquid so that old pieces of glass seem thicker at the bottom than at the top. In order to increase the tensile strength of the glass, the molecules must keep very strong hold with one another. Surface finishing and ion-exchange are two chemical processes that are applied to strengthen glass materials (Chemically strengthened glass, 2011).
Q3. The Giffith’s theory reflects the relationship between crack length at fracture and applied nominal stress. It is a comprehensive equation that can be effectively employed for engineering purposes. Giffith’s theory says that steel is a safer engineering material than glass. It is experimentally proved that the stress...

Sustainability in civil engineering

Sustainability in civil engineering would therefore mean to have balance between these three objectives, both now and into the future.
Let us take an example of the Three Gorges Dam project in China, which clearly illustrates that, lack of sustainability in Civil engineering projects could undoubtedly cause serious social and environmental issues. The proposal for a dam on the Yangtze, the world's third largest river, took shape Eighty years ago and since then it had been in the plans of the Government of China. The Three Gorges dam which in under construction currently is expected to be completed by the year 2009. Upon its completion the dam will be around 600 feet high, 1.5 miles long, and will form a reservoir which is 400...

To avoid this kind of incident in the future, lawyers should be engaged by companies submitting bids to view their bid materials and ensure that all conditions for the bid are met. Care should also be taken to ensure the right bid materials are submitted. Case No.: 2 Singleton Enterprises (Plaintiff) v. Therefore, the mating surfaces should be accessible so that the lubricant can be applied at regular intervals. However, in many cases, the mating surfaces may be in radioactive or toxic zone or may be inaccessible due to design considerations. In such cases on cannot depend on liquid lubricants.
At high load and low speed the liquid lubricant film is not thick enough to ensure effective separation of the mating surfaces and therefore, frictional force and wear loss increases. Therefore, one cannot rely on liquid lubricants under such operating conditions.
Liquid lubricants are not good for high temperature applications as viscosity decreases with increasing temperature and vapors may also be produced at higher temperature....

...Advanced material: Self compacting concrete: Need of this material: Concrete is one of the most fundamental construction materials in the present age. Its use is widespread given the multifarious advantages it offers in comparison to other construction materials as steel or wood. Concrete has been in use for quite a while now but there have always been problems vibrating it in condense reinforcement nets in structural elements. Closely spaced reinforcement bars enclosed in complicated structural elements allow very less room for engineers to run the vibrators between the reinforcement bars in order to ensure that fluid reaches each and every corner of the element being cast. Many times, efforts would go in vain resulting into honeycombed...

This paper gives a detailed information about civil engineering as a profession and how the importance of this profession in the world today. Being an analytical thinker and designer, a civil engineer is in a much better position to find out solutions to the problems faced by the world today. The relevance of civil engineering in almost all aspects of life has resulted in the origination of many inter-disciplinary fields of engineering and civil engineers today are working with all other branches of engineering for the benefit of human beings through sustainable development for saving the planet.
