The relationship between the teacher and the parent of the disabled child is important in quite a number of ways.Parents and teachers should come together and determine the level of the child’s disability. In this, the educational level in which the student should be is determined, either to be mainstream or special (Gunn, 2002). Mainstream education may be recommended because it gives the child the feeling that he/she has the capability to equally match with normal students, but in serious disability cases, mainstream education is not possible.

A parent-teacher relationship should be accurate and intense up to the point of home visits, this gives both the teacher and parent time and space to be able to interact with the child, and it enables them to determine the rate of development of the child. This interaction also gives the child opportunity to also state his/her shortcomings and strong points. This grows the child’s morale to be able to achieve and learn.A parent should tell the teacher what cause did the disability came to be on the child, this gives the teacher the knowledge on what boundaries not to cross.

A teacher should not mention any case which should frighten or bring disturbing images upon the student (McCleary-Jones, 2007). This helps the child to heal from any trauma he/she had faced which lead to his/her disability condition, to achieve this, the parent must provide the teacher with necessary information.The parent-teacher combination must be put into place such that both the strong points and weaknesses of the child are determined. Once the teacher is aware of the child’s strong points he/she may be able to give the child activities which he’s good at, knowing he/she is good at something boosts the child’s self-esteem.

The child’s self-esteem plays a major both socially and psychologically. Once at home, the parent has the role of developing the self-esteem of the child by involving him/her in the community activities, and at school, the teacher does it also in school by the involvement of other students. Students with disabilities when given the chance to start school like normal kids they tend to be the best performers. This gives the impression that disability is only a natural part of the environment, not a condition that leaves the affected without the ability to do anything or something done by normal kids better and perfectly.
