Similarly, with the help of a reading glass, I could overcome the problem related to eyesight to a certain extent. However, some problems skills in writing and difficulty in understanding words still exist.

Thesis statement: The factors that contributed to my learning difficulties include learning disabilities like Dyslexia. However, I have dealt with this problem by attending college writing classes and reading AP English literature. I have experienced significant improvement in reading, but I need to improve my writing skill and ability to understand certain words. Discussion The onset of my learning disabilities was visible in the form of specific difficulties in reading and writing (dyslexia) properly.

The American Psychiatric Association observes learning difficulty as “the individual generally has little understanding of written language; spoken language is quite limited in terms of vocabulary and grammar” (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 2013:36). I think the primary symptoms were inadequate comprehension in subjects taught in language classes, for instance, if my teacher is giving a lecture on the topic of ‘fiction,’ I may sometimes take the term to be ‘fusion’, due to the resemblances in both periods.

Thus, there had always been similar confusion because of the lack of enough comprehension and concentration on the subject matter. At certain times, I failed to understand the exact meaning of the phrases used by the teacher while taking the class on classic verse or drama. The poor grammatical apprehension made the learning process more meaningless, and my academic performance declined substantially. The American Psychiatric Association continues, “difficulties in the acquisition and use of language due to a deficit in the comprehension or production of vocabulary, sentence structure, and discourse.

Language deficits are evident in spoken, written, or sign language” (p. 42). Short vocabulary was the other obstacle to be addressed. During class sessions, I could understand what the word meant but sometimes could not apply the contextual meanings of words. Resolution: The college writing classes were somewhat different from the lower class experience, substantially changing almost all students, especially me.

The AP English course was the compulsory part of the curriculum intended to get proficiency in English and literature. It was an excellent opportunity to read a number of classic books related to poetry, drama, fiction, and tragedies (mostly Greek). Besides, book analysis and essays on different topics were integral to learning. The new circumstances gradually brought up changes in me. Also, literature reading had become a habit that enriched my vocabulary and ability to understand the meaning of words.

The new situation was challenging, but I needed to confront it at any cost to nurture my capability. Nothing can pull me back again; I have struggled against all my disabilities and moved forward and improved myself. So, I was determined to move ahead with a brave heart and slowly reduce the effect of my disabilities as far as possible. Improvement: I decided to improve my reading ability comprehensively. Therefore, I concentrated on reading literature. Regular reading enriched my level of understanding of words and vocabulary.

I can ensure that the way I chose is better by all means, as it developed my reading ability daily, which helped me evaluate myself and increase my confidence with every step I took. However, there are still some areas to be improved, such as my writing skill, but I am confident that I can overcome that barrier soon. Another hurdle I must overcome is the ability to understand certain difficult words that are a heavy task for me. So, I must make my memory system vigilant to recall things I learned before and reinforce what I was taught earlier.

Summing up, learning disabilities transformed my everyday life into a nightmare, but I tried my level best to overcome them same. Besides, my current status as a student with dyslexia proves that I can improve myself. For example, this essay is the best example to prove that I can overcome learning disabilities. Still, thousands of dyslexic children are ignored by mainstream society and are forced to lead secluded lives. So, I project my life history and current status as a dyslexic student to motivate dyslexic children, their parents and those who work for children with special needs.
