Personal ment for Masters Degree in Biotechnology Part I The quality of education and training one gets greatly influence one’s professional success. It is always important for a student to enrol in a renowned institution to fulfil his/her academic aspirations. In addition, one’s creativity should be on a par with the discipline one chooses. When it comes to me, I am a final year student in biotechnology with good academic record and project experience. A brief description of my education, experience, and life ambitions will prove that I am a good candidate to apply for Biotechnology Masters program in your esteemed institution. I have been very much interested in studying living systems and organisms since my school days. It was this interest that made me think about gaining a Bachelors Degree programme in biotechnology from…………..University. With regard to my project experience, I have done very intensive experiments in microbial fuel cells generating electricity. The work involved very complex laboratory tryouts, note taking, and revisions. Apart this, I have some experience with working in a special needs school for seven month as a volunteer. This was a very good time in my life in terms of personal experiences and academic benefits. I will explain some of the laboratory techniques involved in my studies. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is one among them, which is a biochemical technology in molecular biology. This technology is usually employed in DNA related experiments including but not limited to DNA-based phylogeny, DNA cloning, gene analysis, and forensic science. Chromatography is another process I have applied in my project. This is a set of laboratory techniques used to separate the various constituents of a mixture. This can be either analytical or preparative depending on its purpose. For instance, preparative chromatography is used in purification processes whereas analytical chromatography for measuring the proportion of a specific component in a mixture. Yet another interesting laboratory experiments in which I am proficient is Gel electrophoresis. This is a method used for the division and analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins based on their charge and size. It has wide use in clinical chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The western blot, also called the protein immunoblot is an analytical technique used to detect specific proteins in a sample of tissue. This experimental method has wide scope in the field of my studies, and I have already utilised it in my laboratory tests. ELISA is another test used to determine the presence and intensity of a particular protein in a sample. This also has some importance in the study of Biotechnology. Admittedly, I have done a lot outside my studies to develop a good career ahead. My project in particular helped me identify various issues, challenges, and opportunities in this field. I was very much interested to find out how it is possible to generate energy from wastes by exploiting microorganisms. I realised that the particular branch of study has great relevance today as this can answer the issues like energy scarcity and waste disposal. In short, I do have the insight that in order to be useful and effective in the modern world of science and technology, one should have in-depth knowledge of multiple subjects. At this point in my life, I understand that I am in need of higher education in biotechnology and I must gain this from a reputed University, and as everybody knows, this (NAME of the institution) institution is known for the quality of education it imparts. Part II As I pursue biotechnology course, I realise that my choice is right and my vocation lies in this field. As I probe further, I am getting aware of the various possibilities and specialisations in the field. For instance, Microbial Fuel Cells utilise bacteria to convert organic waste into electrical energy. This process is environment-friendly. This has various practical applications such as in domestic management, hydrogen production, and many more. Another interesting area of this study is the biomedical side of biotechnology. This technology is widely used in healthcare treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment by combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences. I am aware of the additional skills and knowledge required in this field of study, namely various computer applications in biotechnology. To be specific with my main modules; they included bioprocess technology, recombinant DNA applications, bioinformatics, environmental biotechnology, and microbial form and function. Once I complete the graduation, I have the opportunity to apply for Medical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical & Molecular Sciences Research and Biopharmaceuticals. Regardless of the area chosen, higher studies in biotechnology require outstanding skills in modern computer applications and programming. As far as I am concerned, this is a broad concept in which computer technology is combined with bioscience so as to replicate and analyse biological information. Computer science solutions make problem solving easy as this can utilise databases, tools, searching, and investigation of biological molecules very easily. I want to develop my computer programming skills in bioinformatics, for it is important to understand the algorithms behind the strategies applied in research. I want to study the principles and applications of analytical flow cytometry and result analysis using specialised software. There are a few software packages like WindMDI , CXP, MultiTime, MultiCycle, DIVA, Flowjo, Summit, Kaluza which I am not familiar with, but want to try out as I pursue my course. There were several instances when my professors appreciated my endurance and positive outlook. Also, over these years, I spent considerable amount of time reading various books and journals on biotechnology and its multiple applications. However, one must have certain level of programming skills for creating specialized software tools so as to carry out research in a timely manner. Using traditional software may not always help to achieve the goal. Moreover, depending on traditional software developers can be a time-consuming and challenging task if they do not have good knowledge about the bioscience environment. In total, I realise that my potential lies in biotechnology, and I am determined to pursue my studies in the same field. I believe that I can find out solutions to some of the growing environmental issues of the world once I have a masters degree in biotechnology. There are various human friendly micro organisms and particles that need to be studied and protected for the sustainability of the globe.
