This makes up around 75 hours every week, including 5 hours of television and movies, 2.5 hours of music, 3 hours of playing video games and using the internet, and barely 38 minutes of reading, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF, 2011). These are alarming statistics, showing a very unfavorable trend in how society is progressing. This problem occurs because these young users are introduced to the internet without introducing its proper uses. Thus, they use it to play online games, join social networking websites, and other unproductive activities.

Thus, it is inevitable that their excessive and improper use of the internet leads to them performing poorly academically and drifting away from family.Another article on this topic, “Kids and Electronics,” presents research on children who spend excessive time on video games and other such technological entertainment. The research shows that these children have a poorer academic record than students who participate in extracurricular activities (Sawyer, 2010). Their multitasking habits make their attention span small and unfocused, due to which their grades suffer.

Experts like Dr. Rosen at California State University have also conducted research on this matter and find that this multitasking habit of 16 to 18 year old can include up to seven activities, such as texting, using Facebook, and watching television, and chatting with friends online. Such habits worry experts, such as Rideout, Vice President at the Kaiser Foundation, who states that such a state is worrisome for him. He doubts that such habits will leave these children capable of focusing on work, demanding their undivided attention (KFF, 2011).

This matter should indeed be worrisome to parents and responsible authorities, as it shows how these children are ruining their own chances of having a bright future.
