Personal ment for Medical School I still remember the stories of Florence Nightingale that my grandparents would tell me at bedtime. I was inspired by how she cared for the wounded and the sick, visiting patients in the darkness of nights, holding candles and lanterns. I always thought what can motivate one so much that one wants to sacrifice his life for the satisfaction of wounded souls. Till then, I did not know what it felt like to see gloomy eyes shedding tears of thanks and hear miserable lips uttering silent prayers for you.
I have seen my parents working hard throughout their lives to make both ends meet. I have seen poverty. I have seen my parents sick and not being able to buy medicine. Whatever the circumstances, they have always taught me such values that have always helped me to inculcate honesty and hard work in seeking high quality education. Through every financial crisis, it was their prayers and my uphill struggle that has led me this far in my educational career with good achievements and high goals.
I always dreaded doctors as I had really bad experiences with some of them in Ukraine, my homeland. Once, I caught severe diarrhea due to an expired drug a rude physician gave me mistakenly, which developed a sort of hatred inside me for doctors. But when we moved to Canada, I had a totally different experience with doctors. I still remember Dr. Frina Gofman who was the first doctor I visited in Canada and who changed my view of doctors. She was such a gentle person that I instantly wanted to be like her. I guess she was the second person who inspired me to enter the field of medicine, Florence Nightingale being the first! Moreover, I always wanted to know how human body works, where the blood flows and how the brain processes. I had this earnest desire to explore the big secrets that lied inside the body. Let me tell you how I became serious to pursue medical profession and what lesson I learnt from my experiences.
When I was in my last years of high school, circumstances allowed me to get training in martial arts in 2005. I would practice martial hours several hours a day. My passion turned it into a volunteer job and then into a paid one. I learned human body’s anatomy and the anatomical organ positioning which forced me to learn anatomy in my spare time. I learned self-discipline and will-power development from this job. My participation in the Toronto Marathon for Cancer in 2007 also taught me lessons of perseverance and constant struggle that will help me keep up my spirits once I get into the medical school. Wanting to know more about human anatomy made me walk into the chiropractic clinic, Physiomed, where I assisted Dr. Bringleson in IFC, Tens, ultra sound, x-rays and kinesiology. This got me a volunteer job as a personal trainer and Kinessiologist’s assistant at Physiomed which enabled me to learn about rehabilitation treatments and face-to-face communication with patients.
After graduating high school, I got a job at Electrolight, a lighting store, where I worked as an electrician, stock manager and showroom organizer. The job, on one hand, assisted me in college expenses and, on the other, taught me important lessons of leadership and effective communication which are the key characteristics a physician should possess while working in a hospital and dealing with patients.
My passion for medicine has not let me become lousy even in summers. After I graduated from the Centennial College with Honors where I studied general sciences, I took admission in a third world country’s medical school to get acquainted with medicine. I studied pre-medical courses like anatomy, physiology, organic chemistry, and medical nomenclature. I also participated in the on-field work, examining patients and getting familiar with the practicalities. The experience made me learn about international health policies and cross-border medical communities which motivated me to bring positive changes in the international health infrastructure. To enact my plan, I have been, until now, organizing volunteer groups from various medical institutions to join in a research on international health policies. The aim is to gather the best points from different global medical structures and combine them all in one health policy that should be recognized worldwide. I am working passionately on the research paper which shows how eager I am to contribute to the field of medicine.
I cannot better prove my craving for the medical field than by stating that I have also been a voluntary representative of Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), which is a program designed to improve education in underprivileged communities; and, have also worked for one of ABCD’s subgroups Entre Nuestras Familias, which aims at educating high school students about sexual education. This made me contribute to the health communities and motivated me to go ahead in the health sector.
The most cherished accomplishment of mine has been my getting a job as the Head of Business Development representing Starmind at Harvard and MIT. I work to establish Starmind headquarters and develop business strategies to make it a legal organization in the USA.
I happen to have written a thesis on mitral valve replacements and the delivery of medication to the heart which comprised of extensive reading research under the supervision of Dr.Ptak of Harvard medical school. The paper is presently under evaluation and expecting publication in Germany.
My personal statement might be plain but is very truthful. I have tried to give you an honest picture of who I am. My educational career, voluntary jobs and work experiences are a very clear depiction of how much craze I possess to bring about fruitful changes in the healthcare industry. I want to live like a person who the needy look forward to for help and assistance. I want to get misery and melancholies disappear from the faces of people. And this is what drives me to apply for admission in a medical school.
