One of the recommendations by Perry, Amadeo, Fletcher, and Walker (2010) in the report “Instinct or reason: How education policy is made and how we might make it better” is for schools and other academic institutions to keep abreast of best practices. “If research evidence tells us anything, it is that improvements in educational standards come from better teaching and learning rather than structural change” (Perry, Amadeo, Fletcher & Walker, 2010, p. 44). My thesis topic has been conceptualized along these claims and can be broadly classified as research for education.

I plan to investigate the effective strategies for teaching art history in primary school. Hopefully, my proposed area of research will have significant implications for the development and improvement of teaching art history in primary school. There are two primary questions that will be answered in this paper: (1) How is education understood in the two research articles relevant to my thesis topic?; and (2) What implications do this understanding have for the research methodology and research methods?

To be able to answer these questions, the paper starts with an overview of the concept of education, which discusses briefly the philosophical background of education. The next section, as previously stated, will give a discussion of the nature of educational research. The two studies will be defined and discussed in the third section of the research paper, together with a critical review of each to answer the two primary questions. The concept of education, discussed in the succeeding section, is essential in providing a framework for understanding the two research articles that will be highlighted in this paper.
