Active Lesson Plan al Affiliation Active Lesson Plan Grade level: Eight Common Core Standard: “Use knowledge of a language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening” (Beach, Thein & Webb, 2012). Lesson Description: Title: Prewriting Strategy to Enhance Detail in Writing Topic: Writing in Detail General Goal(s): Students will be able to write in detail when practicing to write independently. Specific Objectives: a. Students will identify examples of using detail when preparing mentor texts b.

Students will question their peers c. Students will add detail to their writing Required Materials: paper, pencil, and novels (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins) Lead-In: Read an excerpt from Collins’ novel especially a page where she describes a scene. After that, ask the students to mention some of the details presented in the reading. Procedures: 1. Read an excerpt from one of the novels and then allow the students to discuss the importance of adding detail to independent writing in groups. 2. Let students use independent novels as mentor texts and allow them to identify paragraphs that show detail on the blackboard.

They can do so by indicating the page number. 3. Allow students to engage in a pre-writing activity by allowing every student to write a moment in their life in detail on their pieces of paper. 4. Let students introduce their topic on a piece of paper and distribute the papers to different students so that they can write questions on the topic 5. Return the papers to the initial owner's Plan for Practice: Students will read questions and respond in detail. They should focus on one moment that lasts a maximum of five seconds.

The students will go around looking at the topics of their fellow students to ensure that they adhere to the following guidelines. Reflect Anticipatory Set: students will present questions about the text presented at the beginning of the lesson, and add detail Assessment Based on Objectives: the teacher will look at how students share with their peers. Adaptations: students with reading deficits will use reading texts of lower levels. Extensions: students with advanced reading skills will use reading texts that require a higher reading level.
