The Principal: Creative Leadership for Excellence in School (Chapter 7 and 8) by Ubben G, Hunges L, Norris C.Chapter 7 and 8 of this book describes how principals should exercise their leadership skills to encourage students’ excellence. Issues dealt with, in these chapters, include the development of study groups, provision of special services, and improvement of the performance of special needs students. I learnt that, in order for principals to enhance the performance of special needs students, they need to take the following factors into consideration: they should familiarize themselves with the Educational Rights and Privacy Act such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 21990 and 2005 (Ubben et al 163); know their roles outside public agencies; and identify denying parents, supportive parents, and nonresponsive parents.

Additionally, they should also consider the following factors in order to develop coherent groups; choose learning sequence, list the crucial learning, describe the learning, and develop learning objectives (Ubben et al 165). These chapters prove that strong leadership skills are required to improve the performance of both regular and special needs students. Principals should concentrate much of their attentions in achieving the set goals and objectives. Moreover, they should exercise their leadership skills within the framework of tasks, responsibilities, and problems.

A learning environment also affects students’ academic excellence. Therefore, principals should always ensure that all students are happy with their learning environment as this will significantly increase their excellence.Dealing with special needs students is a challenge to most principals. I am, therefore, going to formulate a discrete method for creating awareness of both IDEA (1990) and IDEA (2005). These acts provide an outline for providing special services and appropriate methods of disciplining special needs students.

Additionally, most discussion groups, throughout the school, are relatively inefficient. I am, therefore, going to ask all teachers to familiarize themselves with the factors required to establish useful discussion groups, and re- group them. This will assist in improving the value of these groups. Works CitedUbben G, Hunges L, Norris C. The Principal: Creative Leadership for Excellence in School. Boston: Pearson, 2011. Print
