Ubben G, Hunges L, Norris C. The Principal: Creative Leadership for Excellence in School. Boston: Pearson, PrintChapter 7 of this book is about how principals should encourage student achievement. I learnt that organizing learning groups is a key factor in determining a principal’s leadership skills with respect to students’ success. I learnt that in order to form effective groups, the following factors should be considered: define the learning, formulate learning objectives, list the essential learning, designate learning sequence, match a student’s learning to behaviour, and transform the learning process into analytic question.

Chapter 8 of this book is about dealing with special needs students and special services. I learnt that in order to promote the excellence of special needs students and provide special services, principals need to consider the following factors. First, they need to determine how to deal with the parent of the physically challenged students. This may include identifying supportive parents, denying parents, and non- responsive parents. Second, they need to get well acquainted with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 1990 (Ubben et al 161).

Additionally, they should state how to discipline special need students. Lastly, they should recognize their roles outside public agencies. Through these readings, I realized that leadership is a quality that is focused on achieving set goals. It is also bound within the context of responsibilities, tasks, and presented problems. Therefore, principals should control their schools through the manipulation of power that is meant to increase the student’s performance. Both regular and special needs students should also be made to feel happy about achieving excellence and perform within their levels of competencies.

I am currently a member of a discussion group that was formed based on friendship. I am, therefore, going to request our principal to dissolve all the discussion groups and re- group them based on the factors listed in this article. This will increase the value and effectiveness of these discussion groups. In addition, I have realized that the school principal and other teachers lack a logical method of disciplining special needs students. I am, therefore, going to ask the principal to review the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2005), and develop a reasonable approach of disciplining special needs students.
