The Opportunity Cost of College

... that arises regardless of what you do. So for simplicity, assume that room, board, and personal expenses are the same whether or not you attend college. The forgone earnings of $10,000 plus the $6,000 for tuition, fees, and books yield an opportunity cost of $16,000 this year for a student paying in-state rates at a public college. Opportunity cost jumps to about $22,000 for students paying out-of-state rates and to about $31,000 for those at private colleges. Scholarships, but not loans, would reduce your opportunity cost (why not loans?). This analysis assumes that other things remain constant. But if, in your view, attending college is more of a pain than you expected your next best alternative to be, then the opportunity cost...

An organization can go through a structural change. This can be due to a takeover or a complete change of management. In this type of change, the way of working and many dimensions of business activity is altered. This move is usually towards modernization and staying up with the pace but is too fast and sudden, and thus hard for the stakeholders to adjust with. Then there is a change brought about by the change in the services or goods produced and provided. This is usually a positive ch...

The Quality of College Food

A random survey was appropriate for the research given the constraint of time. According to Ching, the research was done in Bunker Hill community college (45). This was a two-year college; hence it was plausible to consider a four-year college in order to obtain reliable deductions. The research carried out was objective given that the results and deductions were obtained in two different days and at different intervals. It was easy to analyze the primary data obtained because it was tabulated in a spreadsheet, which provided a suitable view of the deductions made in the field. A number of factors may cause a lack of parental involvement. Parents do not participate because of poverty, or drug and alcoholism. Teachers in public sch...

Should College Athletes Be Paid to Play

Despite professional sports being a source of income for many athletes, college athletes are not paid. This is termed as exploitation of student-athletes by Sack (93). This paper explicates the reasons why college athletes ought to be paid.
There are opposing arguments that college athletes ought not to be paid to play. For instance, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has implemented policies that do not allow colleges to compensate their athletes for attending their institution other than through covering for their tuition fees or scholarships (Arnold 121). The NCAA also argues that college athletes are not professionals and therefore should not be paid (Arnold 121). Some people conversely argue that the de...

Gender Dynamics in College Education

The period starting the year 1981 has seen women clearly earn most of the baccalaureate degrees in America. In fact, as of 2003, the enrolment ratios for higher education stood at 1.3 female students for every one male student and in the 2012/2013 female students accounted for 57 percent of the overall college enrolments in the United States. In this paper, I discuss the gender dynamics of representation in our college education and changes that are ongoing.

ACT Test Scores Should Not Influence College Admission

The reason for my academic hindrance? An ACT score of 21 is preventing me from attending my college program of choice, which requires an ACT score of 22 for admission. That said, I really cannot understand how a standardized test, which is not meant to measure my ability to succeed in my chosen college major, can prevent me from pursuing my academic dreams and hopes for future career success. Why should a government test score dictate my college future instead of the more reliable academic transcript and college entrance exams given by the university? ACT scores do not dictate the ability of a student to succeed or fail in college and anybody who believes it does is as archaic as the American academic system.
