The Implementation Process: Characteristics of Change Fullan “identified nine critical factors in the implementation process, which he organized into three main categories: 1) Characteristics of Change, 2) local characteristics and 3) external factors” (Fullan, 2001). NEED Most of the students suffer from learning disabilities. There are many factors that affect the concentration of the students. Usually student’s concentration is diverted by the surrounding factors. A healthy environment should be provided to the students. Students might be of any age group, from kindergarten to post graduate students. Every person has one or more disabilities. It might be physical or psychological disability. One of the main reasons of learning disabilities is the lack of concentration. Student’s thoughts divert very easily. They could not keep up their concentration level up to the mark. Short-term memory is also one of the reasons. Some of them were unable to remember previous days lessons or unable to grasp features of learned lessons quickly. Due to the above-mentioned reasons teachers should be responsible towards the students. The best way to teach is to give students a way in which they grasp easily. Here comes the usage of technology where graphical user interface systems can be used to make students understand the subjects easily. They should employ different teaching methods so that students could easily grasp the subject. Student oriented and student concentric activities should be encouraged. Assessing student’s abilities and disabilities is the major factor and teachers should strive to identify these issues. By identifying their strengths and weaknesses one can easily work on these issues. Self-confidence plays an important role in everyone’s lives. It is the deciding factor that decides a winner and a loser. CLARITY Like in any other department catering department also needs to work on the above-mentioned reasons so that most of the students were benefited. The classes were conducted as per the schedule. Eight students a day attend the classes on different days of a week. Each batch of the students has to attend classes 4 days a week. Classes had been classified into theory and practical. During these 4 days 3 hours of practical lessons and 1 hour of theory lessons would be conducted. More number of hours was allotted to practical lessons because students could gain hands on experience with the tools and the methods that would be employed during the course process. Theory lessons were also as important as practical lessons. In theory classes discussions would be held, future plans could be discussed and many other things could be employed. COMPLEXITY Students attending these classes may suffer from learning disabilities. The onus is on lecturers or on the teaching staff. They should shoulder the responsibility of improving student’s abilities and make them believe in themselves. For example in catering care should be taken about following health standards. The students should be taught about the basic heath, safety and hygiene rules. The teaching staffs have to ensure that every student follows the safety standards prescribed by the health department. Negligence regarding health and standards should be treated severely. If violated counselling of students should be conducted. All the safety measures should be up to date and checks has to be done on safety equipment. Since kitchen is not a safe place first aid and emergency telephone numbers should be kept in an easily accessible place. In theory classes teachers should employ different methods of teaching so that students can grasp easily. There should a constant interaction between student and teacher. This kind of interaction eases the tension in the classroom and student feels at home and shows signs of interest in the subject. PRACTICALITY Manufacturing and maintenance industry has been flourishing in the Internet era. These computers along with the latest media players should be capable of functioning in rural as well as urban environment with diametrically opposite extremes of temperature and poor quality power supply conditions. The communication systems have to use high technologies for fast transmission of enormous amount of data. Optical fibres of hundreds of thousands of kilometres are required to be laid around the earth’s surface forming FLAG –Fibre optic Link Around Globe. On the other hand cellular mobile system requires modular cells to supplement the satellite based global communication system. These systems are providing Internet broadband connections that are resulting in the increase in download and upload speeds, just imagine a system with 2 MB link can do i.e., the teachers can teach students through online streaming audio and available online videos. The Q & A session tests the ability of a student. Through Q & A teacher comes to know whether a student has understood the lessons or still facing any problems with the subject. Teaching staff should encourage the students to involve in discussions. This kind of discussions could help in clarifying their doubts and improve the assessment skills. This formative assessment is very much important before doing any assessment on summation. Methods like quiz and solving puzzle would be helpful in making the students to understand the concepts very easy. Programmes like quiz and puzzles keeps the student’s momentum intact. The best way to make a student understand is the use of pictorial description. Students can easily learn by watching a movie or pictorial description on the subject. Written tests should be conducted regularly so that students can assess their performance. If they get a lower grade teachers should help them through counselling or any other possible way. Teaching staffs employ methods like pairing students and make them to work as a group. Another method that could be used is pair checking. In this method one student checks another student’s work. This improves their capability of grasping the subject. Lectures by visiting professors helps I great deal. Seminars should be conducted regularly. Students should be given an opportunity in giving seminars. Presentations play a vital role in seminars. This helps in assessing student’s presentation and communication skills. In catering every student should know how to cook in healthy way. They should be able meet the clients requirements. They should be given extensive training in client interaction. These things cannot be acquired through listening theory classes. One could master these factors by implementing them practically. They should know how to shop and what to shop. The management should give intensive training to the students. Students should be able to decide the right quality and quantity of the vegetables and other food products. Culinary skills are also very important. They should be masters in handling the kitchenware. They should be able to cut vegetables, fruits, etc., in correct size. They should be able to know how to serve and take orders from customers by taking technology as a helping guide. Reference Fullan, M.The new meaning of educational change (3rd ed.).
