Lecturer The EFQM Excellence Model Summary The Criterion Weights of the EFQM Excellence Model co ed by Jacob K. Eskilden, Kai Kristensen and Jorn Hans gives the findings and the recommendations of a well carried out research. It reports on the important roles played by the EFQM Excellence Model in many countries in Europe, particularly in Denmark. The research carried out on the 1992 launched criterion, involved a survey conducted in many companies. It involved the issuance of questionnaires to the chief executive officers in those firms(Peacock, R. and D. Lascelles, 1996). Hence, it was found that the surest way of attaining success is through the use of this model in self evaluation. It has positive effects on the performance of these companies. If well used, it can help in the extent to which the set goals are being achieved. Actually, this is very important in identifying the weak areas and making appropriate adjustments. However, it was found out by the researchers that the use of this model is not the same in all the organizations. It seriously varies because each of these organizations has a distinct perceptions and policies regarding the methodology and approaches used in their evaluation process. Despite the fact that this research was done by reputable scholars, it was still evident that there are still missing links in this research. While the methodology and all the steps were well planned, it is unfortunate to say that this report was biased. It biasely chose the sample population. Instead of extending the population to many other countries, it was only restricted to Denmark. This was the major weakness for this study. The use of choosing such a small population sample was the major weakness of this study. Hence, they should have widespread it to cover the people from the larger Europe if not globally. 2< Key learning poits Even if there are very many companies in the larger United Arabs Emirates, I would like to focus on the Saudi Arabia’s prestigious Isam Eldien Alhamrani Universal Company. It is one of the popular organizations that largely depend on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence model to carry out a self assessment and evaluation of the activities and objectives it aspires to accomplish at any given time in its calendar(Peacock, R. and D. Lascelles, 1996). Obviously, the use of this model helps this company in its drive to favorably compete in the competitive corporate world. In doing this, the primary tenets are that it should be upon this firm to ensure that there is a proper management of its affairs at all the times. Therefore, instead of relying on other holistic methods of evaluation like the Organizational Integrated Quality (OIQ), it is generally accepted that it is only this model that will put this firm in the right path towards success. Because of its proper use, the Isam Company has been in a better position to bridge the various gaps in its operations as it seeks to reach an ultimate decision that is definitely essential for its success. In this regard, it means that it is used to help in establishing a cooperative team of workers, provide a basic structural guideline for the organization’s management system. Lastly, it is also helping this firm to improve the efficiency of its operations. During its self evaluation process, the Isam Eldien Alhamrani Universal Company makes a good use of the two major components of the EFQM Excellence Model’s components: the enablers and the result criterions. It’s the enablers that help to determine the role of the organization. In doing this, it help to specify the organization’s leadership, strategy, people, products, partnerships and resources. These all form an integral part in determining the direction this firm takes in its pursuit for success (Peacock, R. and D. Lascelle, 1996). On the other hand, the result criterion as the name suggests, only focuses on the achievements of the firm. Unlike the enablers, its major focus is on other factors like the clients, people, society and the key results. This is because; this firm does not exist in isolation. It is the important roles played by these parties, particularly the customers that make the firm to be regarded as successful or otherwise. Hence, the Isam Eldien Alhamrani Universal Company ensures that there is a coherent relationship between all the above parties. If this is done, there is an assured success. Definitely, this is why this firm has achieved tremendous successes in this highly competitive sector. 3> Critical analysis Of course, The Criterion Weights of the EFQM Excellence Model, co-authored by Jacob K. Eskilden, Kai Kristensen and Jorn Hans, as well researched document is of great importance to any far sighted business manager from any corner of the entire globe. Most importantly, it can be of a great importance to any organization in the larger United Arabs Emirates(Peacock, R. and D. Lascelles, 1996). If it is properly designed and implemented, these organizations will be in a position to realize a remarkable step in their operations. Precisely, this model will be beneficial in the following ways: i) It can help these organizations to make out if they are actually in the right track of realizing their clearly set goals. This based on the basic fact that all organizations have some target to meet at the end of their fiscal periods as specified in their policies. Hence, the use of this model will be instrumental in helping such organizations ascertain the extent to which they are being realized. ii) It can be useful in establishing and developing a proper means of communication within and out of the firm. If this is done, it will be very easy for such an organization to collect and disseminate useful information in the larger market. This will only be possible if a proper communication system is put in place, something that this model will be instrumental in establishing. iii) If it well used, the EFQM Excellence Model will help the company to evaluate its management and do the necessary adjustments. It can help such a firm to identify and impose the rightfully appropriate managing system to adopt in order to be able to carry out all the outlined activities without any inconveniency. iv) Lastly, through a thorough understanding of the cause and effect relationships between the various variables in these organizations, this model will really make it possible for these firms to gauge and compare their success with that of other competing firms in the market. This will eventually lead to a wider consciousness beyond one’s territorial borders. 4> practical implications As a very keen and observant student, I would like to agree with the fact that this article is very educative. After spending my precious time going through it several times, I would assert that I have learnt a lot of lessons that if well used, will be of a great benefit to any organization aspiring to achieve some level of success. Some of the lessons learnt from this analysis include, but not limited to the following: i) Since the introduction of EFQM model in 1992, it has positively transformed the way in which business organizations are managed, not only in Denmark, but in the larger European continent(Peacock, R. and D. Lascelles, 1996). ii) A part from the EFQM Excellence model, an organization can choose to adopt other evaluation models like the holistic Organizational Integral Quality (OIQ) which is also very useful in carrying out a SWOT analysis for any minded management. iii) The use of the EFQM Excellence Model is not static. It varies with the organizations depending on their capacity, preferences and policies. Hence, the way in which various firms perceive model’s criterion weights vary greatly. iv) Even if the use of this model positively impact of the firm’s general corporate management, there are lots of missing gaps that results from the fact that no adequate research has been done to shed more in this area. 5> Learning reflections i) The use of this strategy by the firms in the UAE will assist in improving the efficiency of production in these organizations. This is because; after carrying out all the appropriate analyses and studies, proper conclusions will be made in accompaniment of well thought and feasible recommendations. After this is done, recommended steps will be taken as suggested in such surveys. Consequently, all the inefficiencies will be tacked appropriately to create way for improvements. ii) If a company opts to use this model, it will be in a better position of achieving excellence.
