Response Techniques Assertiveness is a necessary character that one should learn in different situations. Assertiveness extends to the way one responds to different situations. Different types of responses that allows one to maintain dignity and handle difficult situations. Some of the typical response techniques are fogging, negative inquiry and negative assertion. Problem 1: If youd pay closer attention to what Im saying, youd be able to give some kind of help. What are you? Some kind of moron?

Cant you listen?Response: Yes, if I paid close attention I’d be able to help now. I pledge to pay close attention next time. Now, what we can do to find a solution for this issue.Technique: Fogging The response uses the fogging technique. The customer is very upset that I did not give his problem the proper attention it deserves. He sounds upset, which means it would be sensible to work towards a solution. The fogging technique ensures that the upset customer realizes that I acknowledge the mistake of not listening to him.

It compels the customer to think of a way to solve the existing problem. It is necessary to steer the conversation to a different topic because the customer has started throwing insults. If the situation persists, it might lead to much damage. Fogging technique has been chosen as the appropriate response because it does not give room for exchange of words. It pushes both parties to find a solution. Fogging stops any argument that might have ensued in some situations (Hardcastle, Powers & Wenocur, 2011).
