Extract of sample "Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace"

The top executives like any other person have a right to appreciate other persons and give comments on their physical appearances, as well as their conduct. Since people do not look alike it is normal for another person to compare a person with others especially if they are living together (Solotoff & Kramer, 2006). It is not right to assume that when someone is comparing two or more persons is doing so to seduce them or harass them sexually. The top executives in an organization may compare the appearances and the conduct of female workers for the sole purpose of marketing their company. This may work well for the company if the most attractive ladies are located where they can interact with the clients to market the company.

According to Solotoff and Kramer (2006), the "United States' Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sexual harassment is gender discrimination in violation of Title VII Civil Rights Act 1964". Employers are held accountable for the sexual harassment of their employees while at their workplace. The conduct of the top executives of the accounting firms in the case study amounts to sexual harassment because the result of their conduct was demeaning to the female workers in the organization. There were previous claims of sexual harassment in the same companies and some workers had sued the company successfully against sexual harassment. Furthermore, it was against the company’s culture because there are requirements that physical appearance was a requirement for employment. The top executive's conduct was immoral and ill-intended because it may lower the work morale of the female workers rated low and may even affect their social interactions with other employees.

In conclusion, the conducts of top executives of the accounting firms were unethical and tantamount to the sexual harassment of female employees. The comparison was made by male executives and only for the female employees in the organization. It was not part of the job and yet the employers circulated the images of the employees in the entire company. Therefore, the photos of the female employees would not only be seen by the executive but even by other employees in that company. The company should warn the executives against their misconduct and threaten to dismiss them in case they engage in immoral practices in the future. Read More
