WORK SCHEDULE Executive summary The Acme Mexico store is planning to open in the near future. A lengthy and vigorous hiring and training process will take place when it is opened. In order to staff these positions efficiently and effectively there are a variety of considerations that must be taken into account. This will have to coincide with the Mexican labor laws, Mexican Culture, employees contracts and direct and indirect costs (Ronen, 2001). Some of this cost includes full time and part time wages , training expenses, employee housing expenses, employee retirement insurance and overtime costs.

Given this consideration, it is imperative to come up with a low cost customer service employee daily assignment schedule. The aim of this study was to utilize Linear Programing (LP) to review low- cost customer service employee assignment schedule options. The additional objectives included were to depict the necessity to test theses results for sensitivity to different constraints in order to include a number of total part time and increased labor cost due to non typical days. These models were created by the use of the Microsoft Excel solver to calculate the LP model.

The variety of constraints that were included were: a minimum number of customer representatives per hour, mandatory full time shift schedules include a lunch break of one hour, a standard pay for full time and part time employees, a maximum number of total part time hours and ultimately, a requirement to minimize total wage costs (Tsogas, 2001). The results form the excel sheet indicate than scenario 3 will be the best as it is efficient and effective. This scenario allows for a minimum and a maximum number of full time employees per shift to maintain minimum levels of leadership with our customer services staff at all times, reasonable lunch and dinner will schedules and a maximum part time hours contribution of 50 percent.

This will ensure a relaxation of the 50% constrain on the hours that will be worked on by part time customer service employees. The model used the develop this assignment schedule for this company took into account that store hours were from 7.0 am up to 11.00 pm on a daily basis, employee safety, supervision rules and Mexican labor laws and culture. With the number of employees starting each shift that has been indicated in the table, Acme Mexico City store will be able to meet the number of employees that are required for every shift and also stay equal or below the maximum number of employees that are allowed to work at a time as stipulated in Mexican labor laws.
