It helps to appreciate that in order to get quality output from employees, the gap between ability and that willingness has to be filled. This in turn also helps in the achievement of the organizational goals. Employees who feel appreciated are most likely to work efficiently as they feel like being part of the organization.

By looking at the importance of motivation, the topic also looks at the causes of de-motivation. A drop in staff motivation can become damaging to the business if the cause of de-motivation is not identified and addressed. Some of these de-motivating factors include Inadequate job skills due to a lack of training of staff. This affects the confidence of employees and frustrates the employees which affects their motivation. This is because of a lack of the knowledge to perform what is expected from them. It can also be caused by goal flaws where company goals may not be inclusive of the interests of the employees. This in turn makes employees not feel like part of the organization leading to their de-motivation. Overwork is another de-motivating factor. Employees who are overworked often lose their motivation even if they receive payment for overtime worked.
The topic also emphasizes the principles of motivation which are important in any organization. These include the need to have something. This is a motivational tool as people will work towards what they need to achieve. It also includes interest as people will be motivated to do what they are interested in. Another principle values where people will be motivated to do things that do not go against their values. The principle of acceptance indicates that people will be motivated to do something so as to be accepted in the environment they are in.

This topic also looks at some motivational theories of needs. These include Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory. Here Abraham Maslow’s theory proposed that human beings had different levels of needs. He identified five levels of needs in order of hierarchy. The most basic needs are biological and physiological needs. At the top is the need for self-actualization which Maslow defines as growth motivation and calls the ‘Being Need’ (Herzberg, et al 54).

Diagram of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

This topic also looks at the X and Y theory which looks at people and their work creating space for bringing in an environment where they can feel motivated to perform at their best. The two-factor theory divides work factors into motivational factors and hygiene factors. The hygiene factors are factors reasonable in a workplace that satisfies employees. These factors are external to work. Motivational factors are those factors that ensure that employees produce superior output.
Expectancy theory on the other hand encourages employees to work hard so as to get a reward. When employees value the rewards, they believe that their efforts will result in getting a reward. This is due to acceptable output (Gaspar and Julian 49).
Equity theory focuses on people's perceptions. This theory is concerned with how some people are treated relative to others. This theory encourages people to be treated fairly especially when it comes to giving rewords. When people feel that they are being treated the same way as other people, they’ll perceive that they are all being treated equitably.
