Excessive bureaucracy demotivates employees because set regulations affect creativity. Employees in a bureaucratic organization execute their specific tasks as directed by their managers. At times, employees are right regarding certain work, but their employers insist that they continue with their tasks without any alteration. This restriction prevents employees from developing other measures of executing the tasks consequently minimizing employee’s creativity. Additionally, this restriction tends to demotivate employees largely because they feel that the organization does not support their noble ideas that are beneficial towards the accomplishment of various tasks.

Additionally, the hierarchical authority associated with bureaucracy implies that employees cannot share their personal views toward decision-making because of the setup (Daft & Marcic, 2006). There is a high probability of killing ideas because they originate from the wrong individual. Consequently, ideas may gain support because they originate from the top management. Additionally, there is a perception that the management is always right

This situation makes employees feel that the management distorts data to ensure that performance looks better, though it is not. Additionally, there is interference in internal communications among employees to reflect what the organization wants to be as opposed to what it is. The overall effect is denial which leads to mistakes within an organization. There is a tendency of the management to deny responsibility for these mistakes or failures and may opt to blame some employees (Daft & Marcic, 2006). Additionally, the perceived desires of the management determine decision-making instead of involving employees. This approach makes the top management insulated from reality. Consequently, they opt to utilize stereotypical thinking while making imperative decisions. These feelings may culminate in anxiety among employees. Therefore, hierarchy is essential because too little of it results in discontentment and irritation among employees. This is because a manager may make a horrendous decision that may offend employees, decreasing their level of motivation among them.

In an active organization, bureaucracy tends to be meaningless or time-wasting. If an organization raises its bureaucracy without considering active performance tasks, it can reduce motivation among employees and finally decrease productivity. Excessive bureaucracy is detrimental to an organization because it results in a resentful workforce that performs eternally rather than externally leading to diminishing productivity.

Conclusively, excessive bureaucracy denies employees the opportunity to be involved in decision-making. It also results in poor interpersonal association within the organization and ultimately causes frustration among workers. Employees will become resentful of their jobs because they feel that their tasks do not match their capabilities.
