Performance management is defined as “an approach to managing employees which are concerned with planning employee performance, facilitating the achievement of work-related goals and reviewing performance and these are seen as methods of motivating the workers to achieve their full potential in line with the organization’s objectives.” (Spangenberg, 1994, as cited in Swanepoel, 1998). At Disney Restaurant, performance management will be an ongoing process that will involve planning, managing, reviewing, rewarding, and developing the performance of the employees. This particular strategy aims to establish the level of performance of the employees. This will also help the management to implement measures that are designed to improve the performance of the employees. To effectively implement a performance management strategy, the organization will strive to recruit the best employees, it will also offer handsome compensation to the employees as a way of motivating them as well as to constantly develop and train the employees so that they can keep pace with the changes that may take place in this particular industry.

According to Schultz (2003), rewards and incentives can be used to motivate employees to put the optimum effort into their performance so that they can positively contribute to the productivity of the organization. At Disney Restaurant, this will be achieved through the use o a performance appraisal system. Performance appraisal is a formal and systematic method that is used to investigate the job-relevant strengths and weaknesses of the employees and it is also used to develop the performance of the workers (Swanepoel, 1998). The major aim of performance appraisal is to improve the performance of the employees and this method will be used to gather information about the employees who can be considered for rewards and incentives.

This strategy of offering rewards and incentives is very effective as far as the performance improvement of the employees is concerned. If the employees are aware that they will get rewards for their outstanding performance, it can be seen that they will also put the optimum effort into their work. This will also motivate other employees to work hard in their assigned tasks since they will also be anticipating getting rewards for their handsome work in the company.

To effectively manage the employees as well as their activities at Disney Restaurant, the management will try to interact with the workers daily. An open communication channel will be implemented in the organization where the employees and their managers will constantly interact daily. One important aspect that ought to be taken into consideration by the management is to give feedback to the employees so that they know if they are performing within the expected standards in the organization. The managers should give the employees certain tasks and they will attempt to rate their level of performance from those particular tasks. Where there is a need for improvement, the managers should make sure that this information is communicated to the employees involved.

According to Robbins (1993), performance evaluations provide input into important decisions such as promotions, transfers, terminations, training and development needs as well as personnel planning. The most ideal method for carrying out performance evaluation at Disney Restaurant will include written tests. This method is quite simple given that the employee will be asked to write a narrative about his weaknesses, strengths, and past performance as well as potential suggestions for improvement. It is anticipated that the work tasks that will be performed by the employees will not be so challenging since they are more routine work. However, certain changes will be made in the operations of the employees hence the need to evaluate the performance constantly.

There are many advantages of using written essays as a method of evaluating the performance of individual employees in the company. The individual is likely to write objectively about himself since he or she will be reflecting on something that he encounters daily. This also helps the management to evaluate the employee objectively if he or she is truthful in the written essay. A follow-up using verbal interviews can also be used to ascertain the level of truth as claimed by the employee.
