? CAREER MANAGEMENT IN BUSINESS By Lecturer: of Affiliation: and PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN SECTION CAREER ASPIRATIONS “This section asks you to outline your current career aspirations. You should identify your chosen occupation and job role within that. You may choose to differentiate between short, medium and long term aspirations.” “You should also identify the types of skills/competences that are required to be successful in this role (this must be supported by relevant sources and references), and your current strengths and weaknesses in relation to these skills/competences. Please identify ONE strength and ONE weakness only, and provide detailed supporting evidence.” 1.1 Career aspirations Short term career aspirations: -I have working skills in sales, supply chain, finance training and effective customer services. - I have certification in human resource management and I am beginning to build my successful career as professional human resource manager in banking services and activities. - I learn constantly; hence I believe that an organization that offers internal and external opportunities will contribute to effective organizational development. -I like interacting with everyone on professional issues; thus I believe that a better career in HRM will offer me this opportunity to explore my skills. Therefore, I will like to recognize all facets including pension services, recruitment process, employee relations and benefits in an organization. Medium: -I will utilize my knowledge or experience and available resources in order to find the innovative or creative solutions to business issues. -I will continue improving and expanding my skills in the expertise field through finding the linkages or relationships among various fields. -I will train and mentor the followers in a manner that can enable them to become productive in the organization. -I will learn and understand the cultural beliefs of other people in order to understand the way business activities and use of technology will be impacted by the cultural beliefs. Understanding organizational culture is essential because it will contribute to successful organizational performance. Long term: -I hope in the 4 years from now, I will achieve managerial position and develop a strong team to lead. Therefore, I believe that I can achieve this through hard work and continuous self development with laying a strong emphasis on improving my professional profile. -I will work with the creative and innovative team in the future in order to develop passionate on the way they handle various task in the organization. This is significant because they will enable me to develop effective skills for achieving my career objectives successfully. Singh (2010, p.34) argues that carrying out research and learning innovative or creative ideas is significant. This is because they contribute towards organizational success. - I will develop an action plan for tracking changes in the workplace environment through learning and talent development; thus creating organizational change. Management action plan is significant because it will enable the organization to create transformation and improve organizational performance in the future. 1.2 Skills required/demanded in your chosen occupation/role -Develop experience in Human resource management, training skills, financial management skills, sales management skills and logistics as well as good leadership skills. Bass, Bass and Bass (2008, p. 56) argues that successful HRM should develop effective earning skills and adopt successful leadership theories for management. Employing effective leadership skill is effective because it will enable the HRM to meet the organization objectives effectively; thus creating business change or value. - Developing creative strategic leadership skills is required in the organization. There have been extraordinary heave of concern in business leadership activities in the current banking industries. This is specially the effective skills that HRM should posses in the future. The worry is that the current changing nature of business across the globe has created ways in which HR should keep pace in order to improve organizational performance. Therefore, effective strategic leadership skills are demanded in the business environment. Amason (2011, p.21) argues that effective strategic leadership are essential because they will create change in ever changing business environment. -Exceptional communicator is an effective tool for creating organizational change. Communication is effective in the organization because it reduces conflicting issues that may arise within the work environment. Johnson (2008, p.33) argues effective communication is one way that will enable one to become a champion in business. He further comments that effective communication will enable the resource managers or leaders to solve internal and external conflicts arising in the business industry. He or she should be able to listen and respond to any problems impacting employees. This is essential because it will contribute to convey information verbally and in writing form; thus contributing to organizational change. A successful communicator should be ready to listen and analyse significant ideas. This is vital because it will enable him or her to deliver appealing information to the audience. -Accountability skills are essential because the HRM should accountable for any issues arising in the organization. For instance, in case of fraud issues in the bank, the HRM should be ready to be accountable. He or she should offer effective solutions to the business problems in an effective manner. -Computer or technological skills is another effective skills required in the organization. Computer knowledge has become a growing concern in many organization fields. This is because of the increased technology advancement. Many organizations in the contemporary business environment incorporate technologies in order to become innovative and deliver services to all customers efficiently. Therefore, the organization requires people with technical skills or computer literate people to handle technology efficiently. This is essential because it will enable human resource managers to utilize organizational resources effectively; thus meeting the demanding needs of organizations effectively. 1.3a ONE Strength (with examples) -One of the strength is that I posses effective communication skills and this is one of the significant areas emphasized in the management courses. Communication is one of the major significant leadership roles in an organization. Many organizations emphasize effective communication both verbally and in writing form. This is because communication is one way through which an organization can create change. The bank managers deal with customers of all types; hence they should understand the way of communicating effectively. This will enable them to meet the demanding needs of clients; thus improving organizational performance. For instance, I was trained on the way of developing effective communication skills. This was during my internship in business management where I was awarded a certificate for being a good communicator. Mondy, Noe and Gowan (2005, p. 201) argues that successful leaders should develop effective communication skill for competency in a business environment. The HRM should know the way to communicate about organizational needs, problems and be ready to offer valuable information. This can only be achieved through effective communication; thus contributing to organizational transformation. Therefore, effective communication is the key to successful organization performance because it reduces the likely issues or conflicts that may arise in an organization. 1.3b ONE Weakness (with examples) -One of the weaknesses is that due to the ever changing business world, it is difficult to develop a business strategy that will sustain the business. Although, the organization demands a leader with strategic leadership skills, developing effective business strategy is an issue in many organizations. This is due to constant changes in the business environment, thus managers should keep on changing business strategy in order to adjust and adapt to the business environment. This changes results due to increased technology advancement; thus one needs to keep making strategic changes now and then. This may become a problem because not all strategy can become successful especially in the current changing business environment. For instance, one can employ Michael Porter’s business model of industrial and organizational approach but this may fail to work properly. This is because many business executives employ customer value approach and social corporate responsibility to achieve demanding needs of customers. In the competitive business environment, business managers can employ Porter’s five analyses to achieve a competitive advantage. However, this model may not become successful because of the ever changing business environment. SECTION 2: REFLECTION ON YOUR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT “This section asks you to reflect on THREE significant experiences/incidents where you have learned a new, or developed an existing, skill or competence. These experiences/incidents could be based in any relevant context (e.g. work, university, home, social clubs etc.) but must refer to skills that you believe will be important in your future employment and career.” Experience 1: Describe the experience -One of the significant incidents where I have developed experience in the already existing skill is making effective decision. I developed effective decision making because of the already existing skills of communication and listening skills. Decision making process is desirable in any organization because it is through efficiency communication and listening skills that one may be in a good position of managing organization. Successful leaders should understand that the way they can solve issues and make decisions that are based on effective listening and communication skills. This reveals as to why many organization emphasize of effective communication skills when recruiting employees. They emphasize in case employee have successful competent skills that enable an organization to become successful. Thus effective decision making skills are vital and this may enable the company to achieve their stated goals or the organizational mission or vision successfully. What did you learn? -I learnt that effective decision making determines the organizational behaviours towards effective organizational performance. -I learnt that effective communication and learning skills are essential in making decisions that can help the company to achieve success. -Also, successful managers can improve performance through proper strategic decision making processes. -It strategic decision making that an organization can compete favourably with their competitors; thus achieving competitive advantage. Teamwork is significant in my future employment because of varied benefits. It is through effective teamwork that one will solve organizational problems successfully. Segal (2011, p.89) argues that teamwork enables employees to develop unique skills vital for creating organizational change. In the business industry, employing accounting methods in providing financial measures is crucial in justification concept of teamwork. This is because many people make contributions and offer mutual support; thus reaching the desired decisions faster. -It is through teamwork that managers can develop a health competition. Brandimarte and Wiley InterScience 2011, p.27) reveal that developing a healthy competition can enable leaders to motivate employees; thus encouraging them to become productive. I also learnt that teamwork can enable employees to develop unique talents and relationships vital for increasing organizational performance. Experience 3: Describe the experience -The last competent skill that I have developed through learning is listening skills. Good communicators should understand that listening is significant. A leader cannot achieve organizational needs in case he or she does not listen effectively. Steinberg (2006, p.124) argues that listening is more significant than even speaking. A successful leader with effective listening skills should influence the audience and make use of skilful words in establishing information efficiently. - Successful HRM should also have effective learning skills. Learning skills are required in any organization because it is through learning that leaders can develop effective leading skills for creating organizational value (Aston Centre for Human Resources 2008, p.122). How have/will you use this new skill to aid the achievement of your career aspirations? -I will use this new skill to lead other effectively; thus achieving my career aspirations successfully. -I will use listening skills in directing financial reports through listening carefully from organizational members. -I will also use effective listening skills to improve my leadership skills; thus achieving career aspirations effectively.
