Global Warming Is a Myth Global warming has become a major news item in the recent past. The term ‘global warming’ is an adopted term that means the increase or expected increase in global atmospheric temperature. The issue of global warming has been associated with a lot of negativity to the extent of instilling fear and anxiety on people. The negative impacts of global warming have been emphasized in recent decades. The fact that global warming has become a major news event has made the people to believe that it is a reality. However, people need to consider all the possibilities in connection to the expected global warming. On the other hand, the media emphasizes on the negativity of global warming without considering any possible benefits from global warming. Considering the negative and positive sides of the issue, I can claim that global warming is more of a myth than a reality. This paper will, therefore, discuss factors that make global warming to be more of a myth than a reality. Carbon dioxide from industrial processes and industrialization has been considered as the main cause of global warming. Although industrial carbon dioxide has been linked with global warming, there are no known facts on the effects of carbon dioxide on increase in global temperature. Carbon dioxide composes about 3% of the atmosphere at normal condition. The atmospheric component of carbon dioxide is insignificant compared to other gases such as nitrogen and oxygen that compose the atmosphere. From this comparison, it is evident that carbon dioxide cannot cause a major change in the atmosphere as well as changes or effects that can be caused by other gases. The fact that carbon dioxide is not sufficient to cause a major change in global climate nullifies the possibility of global warming. If global warming resulted from other atmospheric gases, then it would be possible to realize the effects of global warming. Any effect resulting from the expected global warming is attributed to human activities such as industrialization and deforestation. Industrialization has been considered as the main factor that leads to increased carbon dioxide rate in the atmosphere. On the other hand, plants assist by eliminating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Deforestation, therefore, creates an imbalance between the carbon dioxide added into the atmosphere and the amount of carbon dioxide eliminated from the atmosphere. Global warming is a myth that people have been made to believe. The effects of carbon dioxide also contribute to the controversy of the issue. It is well known that carbon dioxide produced by human activities is insignificant compared to the amount of carbon dioxide produced by natural phenomenon. It has also been established that about 97% of the total atmospheric carbon dioxide is produced from natural activities such as respiration and decay (Contoski, 2010). Human activities constitute the remaining percentage despite being considered as the main cause of global warming. The total biomass produces more carbon dioxide than all the carbon dioxide produced from human activities. Termites, for example, produce more carbon dioxide than all the industries in the world. If carbon dioxide is the main cause of global warming and if the rate of increase in global temperature is proportional to rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide, then global temperature could have reached its extremes a long time ago. In addition, carbon dioxide produced from the seabed exceeds the amount produced by human activities by a great margin. It can be said that if carbon dioxide is responsible for global warming, then the nature is the main cause of the phenomenon. An increase in atmospheric temperature also contradicts the excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is because the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide has dropped drastically as compared to the past centuries. Increased industrialization and transportation activities do not fully compensate for carbon dioxide contributed to the atmosphere by natural activities. Other natural activities, such as volcanic activities, also contribute to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The amount of carbon dioxide contributed by such activities is incomparable to the amount of carbon dioxide produced by human activities such as industrialization. This implies that the prediction and anticipations concerning global warming and increased human activities are inaccurate. It is obvious that human activities have little or no effect on global climate. In addition, human beings are incapable of controlling increase or decrease in global temperature. The analysis also shows that human activities have insignificant contribution to global temperature and, hence, they have little control on the increase or decrease in global temperature. Human activities are, therefore, not the main cause of global warming and the prediction and hypothesis made by global warming campaigners are unrealistic. This, again, proves that global warming is more of a myth than a reality. Results or predictions on global warming are based on data that has been gathered over a long time. A close analysis on climatic data proves that global temperature has been decreasing over the past centuries. In addition, there is no any meaningful conclusion that can be derived from a short-term observation of atmospheric data as done by most anti-global warming campaigners. Scientists need to analyze data that have been collected over a long period for them to come up with valid conclusions concerning trends in atmospheric factors such as carbon dioxide and global temperature. However, most of the predictions and hypothesis made by anti-global warming campaigners are based on short-term data analysis. What is more, most hypothesis and conclusions are based on day-to-day observation of climatic variation with little or no consideration on the historic climatic variation. In recent years, there have been both increases and decreases in global temperature with decrease in global temperature being the most dominant. In 2007, a 0.6 degree Celsius increase in global temperature was recorded. This was followed by a 0.65 degree Celsius decrease in global temperature. This implies that during that period the globe witnessed a decrease in global temperature (Contoski, 2010). The analysis also contradicts the existence of global warming in the recent past. Historic data on atmospheric temperature also indicates a fluctuation between cool and warm season. According to analysis of historic data, fluctuation of global temperature is a natural phenomenon. The data indicates that the world has experienced both high and low temperatures ranges without reaching either extreme. The data also proves that the anticipated increase in global temperature results after a cold season or is followed by a cold season. This proves that current temperature changes are closely related to past climatic changes in temperature. The data also confirm that temperature changes and cycles are natural and seasonal. Human beings have little chance to prevent global warming and its consequences. The result also shows that human activities such as industrialization are not linked to global warming in any way. This argument undoubtedly proves that global warming is more of a myth than a reality. The analysis also nullifies the importance of current efforts that is aimed at protecting the world against any possible consequences resulting from global warming. Suppose global warming was real, then people should focus more on the benefits that can be realized from the phenomenon instead of concentrating on its negativity. This, however, is not the case, since the impacts of global warming are preached more than any possible benefit of global warming. Although global warming is associated with many negative effects, people should start considering the positive side of the phenomenon. This would apply only if global warming was a reality. The fact that the government, the media, and the anti-global warming campaigners concentrate more on the negative impact of the issue proves that global warming is more of a myth that people have been made to believe. If global warming was a reality, then it would be unavoidable. Relevant authorities would, therefore, be more concerned with any benefit that might be realized from global warming instead of concentrating on the negative impacts of global warming. High temperature could be beneficial to the planet than cold temperatures. The distribution of biodiversity between the tropics and the poles is a good indicator of the importance of warm temperatures. Warm temperatures promote the existence of plants and animals as compared to cold temperatures and, as a result, global warming is beneficial. The Polar regions have little or no human activities due to their extreme cold temperatures. Increase in global temperatures could revive the economic contribution of these regions. If global warming was a reality, then people would concentrate more on the positive impact of the phenomenon than the negative impacts Currently the world is undergoing an energy crisis due to increased demand and the need to create and use renewable energy. Cold temperatures increase energy demand due to increased inefficiency in energy consumption and the extra energy required to compensate for activation energy. High temperature would, consequently, be beneficial to the world in terms of energy consumption and production. Solar energy has been considered as one of the solutions to the increased global energy demand, hence, the world will be a better place with increased temperatures. Emphasis on the negativity of global warming indicates that global warming is just a myth that people have been made to believe. Politicians play an important part in the determination of the global activities and ideologies. Following the rivalry between communism and capitalism, global warming seems to have taken the center stage. Although global warming is more of a scientific occurrence or a factor of scientific interest, it has become a political phenomenon. This argument also proves that global warming is an idea that people have been made to believe. The involvement of politicians on the issue has made the public to believe that global warming is a reality. According to Contoski (2010), political activists have hijacked global warming and are using green language to push their political agenda. The political involvement in the issue of global warming proves that the predictions and hypothesis of global warming are similar to other ideologies. Conclusion Although global warming has become a frequent news item, the issues raised by anti-global warming campaigners are not realistic. Carbon dioxide produced by human activities is responsible for global warming, but the amount is insignificant compared to the mass of the Earth and the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide produced by human activities is insufficient compared to the amount of carbon dioxide produced by natural activities and living things. Global warming is, therefore, a political ideology to push the idea of environmental conservation. Facts are important part of any argument and people should be told the truth about global warming based on facts. Global warming ideology lacks enough supportive facts and this nullifies any hypothesis and predictions on global warming. References Contoski, E. (2010). Global Warming Is a Myth.
