Artist Antonio Martorell - Essay Example

Artist Antonio Martorell ‘Antonio Martorell was born on April 18, 1939, in Santurce, Puerto Rico to Antonio Martorell II and Luisa Cardona’. Antonio started showing interest in art when he was a small boy. The eldest of the three children, Antonio used to spend a lot of time drawing. He went to Georgetown University, Washington D.C to study diplomacy and later to Julio Martin Caro, Madrid to learn painting. On his return to hometown, he joined the workshop of Lorenzo Homer at Institute of Puerto Rican Culture3.

Presently, he works at the University of Puerto Rico, Cavey as Resident Artist and Museum Director of Ramon Frade Museum. His writing career is quietly brilliant and precise at the same time. He wrote La piel de la memoria that came under translation by Andrew Hurley as ‘Memory’s Tattoo’ and ‘El libro dibujado’ meaning the drawn book. Presently, he is a regular columnist for Escenario that is a section of El Vocero, Puerto Rican newspaper6. His accomplishments as an artist are quite plenty.

Winner of Bienal de Arte de San Juan, he has provided illustrations to many authors like ‘Alma Rosa Flor, Heraclio Cepeda, Nicholasa Mohr, and Pura Belpré’7.
