Advantages and disadvantages of combing local Asian themes and Hollywood production-style values Name Name pf the institution 24 October. 15 Advantages and disadvantages of combing local Asian themes and Hollywood production-style values Culture refers to the way a group of people lives. Across the globe, people live indifferent ways regarding the behaviors, values and symbols that influence their acceptance of their way of living. Ideally, culture is passed from one generation to the next generation. Asia, as one of the resourceful continent, comprises of different communities henceforth, different beliefs and values. In the films industry (Rahtz, 2007). In America, the Hollywood film production industry has over the decades adopted the Asian film culture. So as to ensure both parties benefits, the Hollywood has taken the step of combining both the Asian culture in the film and its style of production in the film industry. The Asian continent has one of the oldest film production industries. However, over the past years, the Asian film industry has been transformed. In the recent studies conducted by various filmmakers and scholars, it is clearly indicated that the Asian film culture is one of the most dynamic, and innovative industry over the past decades. Through the model of demonstration and circulation, the Asian culture has ventured into major production centers across the world (Rahtz, 2007). This has been fueled by the digital culture at the film industry in Asia. Conversely, as the Asian film industry is being reshaped by the digital culture, the Asian popular culture is circulating in major continents across the globe. Therefore, this paper focuses on presenting the advantages and disadvantages that are there in producing the films that combine the Asian themes and the Hollywood way of producing values. Advantages Asian themes in the films have been over the past years considered as part of the Asian’s culture. By the word theme in the film it is meant that the application of attractive decorations that were used even in the tradition life by the Asians community. Therefore, as these themes portray the sign of passage from one generation to another, they have been in lately used in the films to signify different occasions and different meaning of the films. As these themes are attractive to the people and the filmmakers, over the recent time the Hollywood film industry have considered combining its style of making movies and the use of Asian films. Due to such, applying the themes in the process of making films will only be beneficial to filmmakers’ and the film industry. The advantages are as follows; Filmmakers’ claims that combining the Asian themes with the Hollywood production film industry value will make the film industry in America capture overwhelming numbers of audiences. Looking at the film Chinese Lets the Bullet Fly and The Dark Night done in America, it is recorded that these two type of films are all-time favorite for the audience as thy recorded massive number of viewers. Evidently, Bordwell, Staiger, Thompson, (2006) argue, in the modern industry of filmmaking, the Asian themes has made the Hollywood expand as some of the films produced by the industry has embraced actors from Asian countries. Mostly from Hong Kong, South Korea, and China. Brook, (2015) Indicated viewers or audiences can no longer see Hollywood as a monolithic industry with only one technique of recording and producing its films. Another benefit that can be noted from the cultural act of combining the Asians themes films with the Hollywood industry is that in recent time many Asian actors have earned personal fame. For example, in comparing the Heroes’ Films from China and America, some actors such as Jack Sparrow from America and Jacky Chen from China are famously recognized across the globe. To a better understanding, several actors and actress from Asian have been recognized worldwide as a result making the Hollywood films with the application of the Asian themes (Cagin, & Dray, 2004). People like Michelle Yeoh, Ang Lee among others have made their mark in the Hollywood industry. However, as the Hong Kong film producing company continues to grow, Hollywood has ventured in to implement the Asian themes in its film henceforth, attracting a huge number of Asian-based film casts. Consequentially, making the Hollywood films with the application of the Asian themes have made the Hollywood industry increase a competitive gain in the worldwide market of movies. In particular, the market for the Hollywood films has increased in the Asian market as more audience are attracted to the industry’s film. Dadswell, & Ley, (2009) Stated that the history of Asian market demonstrate that the Asian audience has not categorically embraced Hollywood films. However, with the combination of the Asian themes in making the Hollywood films, the market for the film produced in America have experienced improved and wide range markets in Asia and some other part of the world. Survey carried out by Dadswell, & Ley, (2009) shows that in today market of the film, the Hollywood movies take the share of about 78% in some countries of Asians origin and at about 68% in the South East Asia. For instance, comparing the Chinese film Karate Kid and the Kung Fu Panda, a film made in American, the record says that the two ventured into the market impressively. Henceforth, making the Hollywood enjoy a competitive advantage in both China and America. Besides, the Hollywood industry has over the recent time make excessive profits. As a result, making its films with the combination of the Asian themes. Maland, (2005) Labeled the Hollywood movie industry as the single most profitable industry in the American market and as well as in the export market. The reason making the Hollywood industry one of the most profitable industry in the movie production industry is because of the Asian factor in the industry. The films characterized by the Asian themes and its major export has been in Japan, Thailand, and other Asian nations. Essentially, this had enhanced the industry to become more profitable than any other industry in the global market of recording and casting movies. For example, The Lake House film originally produced in South Korea and lately in the America, it is reported that the film made excess sales in South Korea and America. As scholars have in recent time touched more on the subject or the topic of Hollywood movie industry they refer the industry as the global cinema. However, incorporating the Hollywood movie industry and the Asian themes in the process of making films, has made the Hollywood film industry produce a different form of global cinema (Scribd, 2015). Integrating of the Asian cultural themes together with the Hollywood film industry has impacted to the formation of film components with stylish elements from both the Asian film industry and as well as the Hollywood film industry. For instance, the Hero of China’s Foreign Language Academy Award can be seen as a major example of the global cinema. Let’s take the case of the film The Cow Boy and the Alien. As the films were originally done in Chinese industry, the American version importantly made the two film venture into the global cinema mostly in Asian countries and America. Fundamentally, incorporating the Asian themes together with Hollywood style of making films will be beneficial to the society, as the activity mean creating job opportunities for people across the world. Dawson, (2005) Highlighted that the result of the combining the Asian themes together with the Hollywood style of making movies provide a high laborer situation. People have in different part of the world set movie studios, either in Asia or America whereby they cast films from the Hollywood movies industry. As such, the factor of job opportunity as a result of integration of the two industry, it can be viewed as success not only to its owners but also to the people in the local society In both Asia and America, the film industry have produced high-quality movies. As a result of combining the Asia themes in making the films in the Hollywood film industry. Currently, Hollywood is helping the South Korean film industry in reclaim the quality of its films for the local market in the country. As a result, this activity has been embarked by the executive leader of the Hollywood industry based in the America (Scribd, 2015). Importantly, this has made the industry focus on producing quality films for the local market and export market. As such, comparing the film My Sassy Girl done in Koreans and The Spiderman film made in American, one can see good pictures that are of improved quality. This is a way of reshaping the Hollywood industry, and as well the Asian industry such as South Kores, Japan among others. Importantly, combining the Asian themes together with the Hollywood style in making films make the industry more entertaining (Noh, 2012). The Asian films are the source of common entertainment while the Hollywood films are entirely entertaining. As the survey indicates, the combination of both cases of the Asians themes and the Hollywood style will even make the films produced for entertaining henceforth, attracting more audiences. The Asian themes make the industry have a collective effort that make the viewers experience entertaining scenes and enjoyable films. As the Chines films have a different background, for example, the Hero Movies, combining their themes with Hollywood background makes the films, more stylish. For example, the film The Hero with both the China background has over the past years described as one of the style film in the global market. Lastly, integrating the Asian themes with the Hollywood style of making the movies has promoted teamwork in the industry especially actors from Asia, America and some other part of the world. Any film from Asia, or America requires a collaborative work. The success of a film signifies the power of teamwork. A successful film requires actors, artists, cinematographers, directors and as well the animations specialists (Noh, 2012). More so, in some films that involve the Asian themes, some of them are based on the themes of every individual involved in the collection of the film. For instance, comparing the films the ring and The Mirror, both horror movies, many actors from Japan, Thailand, and America, are incorporated together to form a team in the film. Disadvantages Scholars believe that Hollywood is increasingly expanding across the world. Razonypalabra.org.mx, (2015) stated that for Hollywood to success it needed to apply the Asian themes in making its movies. Razonypalabra.org.mx, (2015) enhanced the findings and said that for the past decades Hollywood has trusted the local market as its source of income but in recent time, the industry has ventured into the overseas market because that the industry has embraced the Asian culture in the process of making its movies. Making the films with the application of Asian themes will make the films that have the worldwide ideas and themes or rather films that are culturally based. However, as the whole idea of incorporating the Asian themes with the Hollywood style of making films sound beneficial to both sides, the idea may have numerous limitations. As such, incorporating the two factor will in turn affects both sides in negative ways. Therefore, below are some of the disadvantages will likely occur when the Hollywood industry use the Asian themes in making its movies; First, combining the Asian themes and the Hollywood style of making films will automatically bring a cultures clash. As an American movie critic, he has noted that watching the films that are originally produced in Asian version and as well as the American version. One is likely to identify some extra subplot that are involved in the original version of the Asian film. This means that as the Hollywood industry do not want to lose its market in Asian countries, for example, in China the industry goes for an extra mile in making the films look like an original China film. For instance, if one compares the movies American and China Iron Man 3 film, it is clearly shown that the China version that was broadcasted and produced in China had some extra scenes that showed the China cultural beliefs. However, for the case of the same film on the America version, the movie was totally different from some scene were missing from the subplot of the same film. Additionally, as the combination of the Asian themes and the Hollywood style of making the films has been all over across the globe, this has influenced the viewer way of living. In particular, the young viewers want to copy the movie features the way of living. For instance comparing the movies, The Flower of War produced in China and the film The 12 Hookers that is produced in the Hollywood style, young people may tend to imitate the young heroes who feature in both films. As the Hollywood film seek the international market viewers, the films act as the way of showing the world the way the American and the Asian community have a comfortable life. Su, (2011) Stated that people across the world are defining their romance life, and heroism through the stories they viewer in the Hollywood-produced films. Moreover, in his survey, Su, (2011) found that the young people in Asia, and America, define their darker life as result Asian-American movies that bring cultural anxiety. Besides, making the American film with the combination of the Asian themes, will make the domestics narratives in America and as well as in China become omitted. As such, focusing on the Kung Fu films either from China or American African narrative or any narrative from other races are usually misplaced. For instance, in America people with the African origin will not be served as the same case with the Asian people when it come to the film industry. At some point in the Hollywood industry, the film critics believe that integrating the Asian themes, and the African themes in the style of making the movies will essentially promote the sale of the movies produced in Hollywood across the world. More so, as the objective of making the American films with the Asian themes is to promote the Asian culture, the same case will apply to the African beliefs and values if their themes are used at the Hollywood. Furthermore, making the Hollywood films with the application of Asian themes may make the film look ambiguous (Zhu, & Rosen, 2010). Making the Hollywood films with the application of the Asian themes require excessive and reliable materials. In some context, the materials may not be clear as they are required to be totally interpreted and investigated. Consequentially, the films will appear unclear to the audience, henceforth, the industry may at risk in the market. Zhu, & Rosen, (2010) Stated that to avoid the movie ambiguity, the Hollywood film casters will be required to spend more money and a lot of time to discuss the materials from different countries so as to achieve a clear idea that will be composed of the plot of the film. For example, The Iron 3 film that was originally done in the China version required a lot of money and time before it was produced in the American version. Also, integrating the Asian themes together with the Hollywood style of making films make the industry dump down some of the actors and actresses. A research by Brook, (2015) shows that the Hollywood industry is selecting actors and actresses according to their fame in the industry. For example, in various movies that involve the Asian themes, actors from China, Korea, Thailand have been selected according to resonate with the viewers. The key reason for dumping the local narratives or actors is because, the Hollywood industry is mostly focusing on the international market. For instance, most of the American and Chinese Hero Movies show the case of individualism within the film industry. On the other hand, combining the Asian movies and the Hollywood style of making the films will cause the cases of adultery or rather premature sex. Comparing the Iron Fist of China and the Transporter Films of America, one can see some sex scenes. As such, the majority of the Hollywood movies has the content of the nudity and sex sections, the application of Asians themes will make it more badly. Culturally, the Asian film does not support such scenes in the film because it may portray a negative image to the society (Dadswell and Ley (2009). In the Hollywood, industry it has become a culture for the movies produced to have nudity and sexy scenes. The scenes are used as a way of attracting more viewers or as a way to boost the selling point of the movies produced by the industry. Moreover, combining the Asian themes with the Hollywood style of making films is not necessary the act of promoting but for the profit purposes (Maland, 2005). As a Hollywood movie critic, he said that in this business of films making no one cares for the cultural beliefs, in fact, actors and film producers are cash driven. He further stated that people especially actors do anything for money in the movie scene. For instance, in the movie Iron Man 3, actors exposes their body for the purpose of making more sales henceforth, showing the sign of the film being a way of making a profit. As a limitation that is related to the integrating the Asian themes with the Hollywood, style of making movies, this will have a negative effect on the society cultural beliefs mostly the young people. To some up this paper, in any case of a film industry, the definition is based on two sides. Similarly, in the context of making films, there are advantages and disadvantages. As pointed out in this paper incorporating the Asian themes together with the Hollywood values of making movies have been a sign of cultural circulation. The act has proved that films can harm or either be good to the audience across the world. This may seem strange, but it is entirely the truth. Consequentially, the above-described points mostly the demerits does not propose that people should stop watching films because people require entertainment in their lives in one way or the others. The advantages of combining the Asian themes and the Hollywood style of producing films can be viewed as the success of the industry. The themes have promoted the Asian culture across the globe as the films are used as the way of presenting the Asian culture to the world. Moreover, incorporating the two, has promoted teamwork in the industry and as well as many actors and actress have been recognized across the globe.
