Character Analysis of Tyrion Lannister from a Song of Ice and Fire Over the Years, have woven greatest characters with the help of their respective literature work. These characters have been carefully created in order to allow readers to relate their experiences as well as understand the manner in which one can make a difference with their contribution within the societies. Likewise, George R. Martin is among writers who have given birth to some of the most fascinating characters in his written pieces. In particular, for the purpose of this paper, Tyrion Lannister has been selected for the character analysis from the epic series of Game of Thrones entitled “A Song of Ice and Fire”. It is highly suggested that one must understand the background of the character Tyrion Lannister in order to understand the manner in which he has been able to make a great difference in the novel or address the culture in the time where the story was plotted by the author. Tyrion has been depicted as a midget or imp who has been made an outcast by other characters of the novel. Among different reasons behind people hatred towards Tyrion includes the death of his mother while she was giving birth to him. Tyrion Lannister does not share a strong bond with his one and only sister named Cersei Lannister. However, his brother Jamie Lannister has a lot of sympathy for Tyrion for which he has helped him throughout the novel. In addition, the community of the Lannister vastly disliked Tyrion because he was expected to be a strategist like his father Tywin Lannister. It was noted that Tywin Lannister was always surrounded by the noble men of the community (however they were presented as people with wicked motives later in the novel). On the other hand, people were well aware of the fact that Tyrion Lannister was mostly surrounded by prostitutes (Brian). It should be noted that the creation of the character of Tyrion Lannister is quiet transitional in different phases of the novel. It will not be incorrect to state that the introduction to the character of Tyrion was quiet notorious. Initially, he was presented as a cunning individual because the author wanted to reveal the true self of Tyrion gradually disclosing his significance in the novel. To provide a basis of relation to the character, Tyrion Lannister was the second son of Tywin Lannister who belonged to rich and powerful families who have controlled their governance over seven kingdoms as a son (Dana). Another aspect of the character, Tyrion Lannister, while coming in contact with other characters of the novel is that he is more involved in getting services from the brothel where he continues to give his money to increased number of prostitute for sexual pleasure. As the story of the novel proceeds, readers would be able to notice that Tyrion is an intelligent person who is quiet good at judging people. Unlike other characters of the novel, it is noted that he has more experience of the world than other. At one point, one may also notice that the character is quiet charismatic because he is not only able to reflect his point of view but also he expresses himself in a very slapstick manner to the people who are playing a negative character in the novel (Brian). Tyrion has greatly depicted the culture of the time where he has been plotted in the novel. It shall be noted that Tyrion Lannister was never trained as a knight. However, in the later parts of the novel, one may notice that he had to take command of the war front because the king of Lannister was a young and incapable boy of Cerci Lannister named Joffery Lannister. This shows that Lannister family had placed its members on wrong designations in the kingdom. It also indicates that the strategist of the Lannister family namely Tywin Lannister was not capable of undertaking the governance of the seven kingdoms because of his incompetent offspring. Despite the fact that he did not have appropriate people guarding the kingdom, he still aimed to conquer different lands. This shows that people during that era were greedy for getting the control of different lands. In case, different governance of the seven kingdoms was not able to play a fair war game, they made use of wicked tricks to win (Dana). There was a lot of hypocrisy that was observed in the culture where the character Tyrion has been plotted. The high class of the society was involved in doing everything other than governing people for a common good. It was noted that the kingdom of Lannister were not at all happy with the way their government was providing them with food and shelter. Furthermore, they hated the king Joffery who was an incapable person. Therefore, at one point of the novel, the readers would be able to notice that he was made a point of protest by the people. Tyrion Lannister, being a hand of the King saved him from such an action from the common people (Brian). Talking about the race or gender in accordance to the character of Tyron Lannister, it can be stated that has been extremely successful in representing dwarfs. In other words, it can be stated that being a dwarf may have been a point in society for joke or consideration for a fool but through the character of Tyrion Lannister, it rather becomes easier to note that dwarfs are as powerful and needed in the society as any other human being tall. For instance, at one point, Tyrion Lannister is made to marry Sansa Stark as a result of a rebellious action of ex-husband of Sansa. At this point, Tyrion turns out to be a person who understood the issues and worries of Sansa Stark. This notes that being an outcast, Tyrion understood the manner in which other outcast in the novel had to be treated with sympathy and affection (Brian). Herein, it also needs to be understood that Tyrion has represented midgets as people of integrity. Despite the fact that Tyrion was habitual of getting serviced by the prostitutes as he considered that as an escape from the hatred and wrongdoings in the kingdom, he respects his wife Sansa. Throughout the novel, he has been projected as a person who is extremely patient and able to control himself before uttering any statement. At the same time, it can be state that Tyrion has represented midgets to be emotionally stable people who love others as taller people do. For example, Tyrion understood that he only got hatred from his father but he still wanted to make a difference in his behavior by winning the battle of the black water. He used his strategy of using acids to make bombs that could explode in the black water. Later, it is found that the wicked men in the committee of governance presented this strategy as lame. As a result, Tyrion is yet again made a point of criticism from his father (Dana). Tyrion presents midgets as a group of society who are constantly made as a point of critic. All the hardships that Tyrion has gone through to let his family know the level of love he had for him goes in vain when Tywin Lannister uttered the following words in the novel addressing Tyrion Lannister: You are an ill-made, devious, disobedient, spiteful little creature full of envy, lust, and low cunning. Men’s laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine. To teach me humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father’s sigil and his father’s before him (197). The above statement makes it evident to the readers that Tyrion had to become ruthless towards his family except Jamie Lannister because he was constantly being a point of criticism and everything that he did to achieve the trust of his father did not really work out for him. Many critics who have been writing about Tyrion Lannister claim that readers would automatically fall in love with Tyrion’s character because he has transitioned to a person who could take control of the chaotic situation of the seven kingdoms. However, some have also marked that Tyrion Lannister has been given much of attention for the role he has played in the novel. However, upon taking a close look at the novel, it becomes easier to note that he has been the main source of bring major change in the storyline such as the event of murder of King Joffery (Brian). Through the above analysis, it comes to understanding that Tyrion Lannister has been an effective character in narrating the culture and society of the time where his character was plotted. At the same time, he has also presented the group of midgets as people not different from the tall human because they also have an attitude of loving others and bringing happiness to other lives by understanding their issues not different than their own.
