Full When Mr. Bean Teach the People “Mr. Bean” is a series of comedy shows portraying the adventures of the character which are rather rude, stupid and exaggerated. It is perhaps initially aimed to entertain viewers and engage them in the world of a man who looks at things differently than the normal. However, it could also be an instrument used to speak to the viewers the realities of life which, when they are not exaggerated and not magnified, will probably never be given notice. After all the laughter and pouting the show might have evoked from the audience, Mr. Bean perhaps should at least let people stop and think about the purpose of the show by thinking about why the character has done some mischievous actions. Some might argue that the show is simply stupid and should not be shown even just for entertainment purposes nevertheless, the power and quality the show holds should be seriously considered and researched on to know more about what could be learned from the series. In “Torvill and Bean” (youtube.com), Mr. Bean goes to a show with his girlfriend. For some reason, the man insisted that they go the opposite way of where they were supposed to enter. Whether Mr. Bean’s decision was due to his stubbornness or he just meant to go against the order, probably, this is a representation of how some people act in such circumstances. Sometimes, discipline is an issue even among decent looking people who would rather go against rules and regulations and take advantage of the most convenient places and circumstances even if those are not which they have paid for. Perhaps the characterization of Mr. Bean in the series is about being selfish and self-centered as seen in the following event. As a result of Mr. Bean’s insistence, they took the wrong seats which were just opposite where they were supposed to sit. When the attendant went to verify their tickets, she told them about the mistake and asked the couple to follow her to their respective seats. Mr. Bean’s girlfriend followed the attendant but the man was still trying to object about it. When Mr. Bean stood up to go to his seat, the performers were already being introduced and the lights in the place were turned off so that Mr. Bean cannot see his paths anymore. Consequently, he passed through the skating rink where the spotlight was being focused on the performers. He became quite a disturbance to the performance which obviously irritated Mr. Bean’s girlfriend. When the show was over, the man was able to find his seat. However, when the show continued, the main character realized that he left his program from where he came from. He tried to go and fetch the program even though his girlfriend was trying to stop him. As the couple struggled when Mr. Bean insisted to go back to the skating rink, one of the performers caught the man on the hand and he stepped on to the rink with the group. When Mr. Bean got near the man who was holding his program, he quickly took it, startling the man. The girlfriend hid her face due to the shame she was feeling about Mr. Bean and she tried not to look at what might happen. The scenes quite picture the seemingly insensitive characters of some men wherein they do foolish things, unmindful of what the effects might be as long as they get what they want. The character of the woman shows the common roles of women in men in real life situations. More often than not, women look out for the best interest of their partners but the men on the other hand seem to be oftentimes myopic, unable to see the dangers they put themselves into. Through the process, most often, it is the woman who feels ashamed for the foolishness of men. As the scene continues, Mr. Bean is shown skating toward the exit and directly to the room of the next performer who was preparing himself. With the acceleration of Mr. Bean, he made a great impact on the door, knocking the next performer off. Just then, the next performers were called for the next show. Realizing that the man lying on the floor was the one being paged for, Mr. Bean took his skate shoes and used them. He surprises the man’s partner when Mr. Bean appears on the skating rink but, they still continued to perform despite the bewilderment. The ordeal resulted in a rather amazing performance of Mr. Bean but it was at the expense of the woman who was absolutely shocked by the way she was treated. Mr. bean was rather enjoying his new found role but his girlfriend was shrinking in shame. The series ended with the scene of the real partner of the skater who went to the rink and punched Mr. Bean on the face who fainted from the attack. The female performer thankfully hugged her knight in shining armor and the two embraced on the stage. Similarly, in real life events, sometimes, there are just people who simply go on their daily tasks just trying to enjoy, oblivious of those whom they harm and shame. However, such events often end with unwanted results just like what happened to Mr. Bean. After being applauded for his performance, he was knocked off by the real performer. The fainting of the main character at the end of the story portrays that when a person is focused on having fun, he would end up a loser even after all the happiness one enjoys as he goes about his fancies. It is perhaps another version of the theme of good winning over evil. On another series entitled “Mr. bean’s Wedding” (youtube.com), the main character engages the audience in a similar funny but loathsome entertainment. At the beginning of the film, Mr. Bean enters the church as the father walks the bride through the aisle. Having entered in late, there were no empty seats but the one reserved for the bride’s father. Mr. Bean recklessly goes in front, past the bride and her father, brushing the man’s shoulder as he made his way to the front seat. This perhaps again shows how some people could really be sickening even in sacred ceremonies such as weddings. When the priest told the people to take their seats, the father of the bride found out that his seat was already taken. Instead of giving the seat to the rightful owner, Mr. asked the mother of the bride to move, in a rather rude way. Nevertheless, the woman obliged and a space was given to the man. As the priest proceeded with the ceremony, Mr. Bean makes faces at the bride and groom which are of course very insulting to the couple. The action is magnified in contrast to what the priest was saying especially when the priest was saying “reverently” (1:32). There was no show of reverence to the church or the priest or even to the couple being married from the actions Mr. Bean made. In most real life situations, disrespect in church may not be shown as obviously as that which is seen in the film however, there are indeed happenstances that show disrespect in sacred places and occasions as portrayed in the film. As the ceremony went on, Mr. Bean continues to annoy the bride and groom as well as the parents of the bride. For instance, he took the handkerchief of the bride’s mother without asking for it and blew his nose quite noisily. He then returns the handkerchief without looking at the woman’s shocked reaction. Then, he speaks the groom’s part which the priest asked for him to repeat until he was silenced by the woman beside him. He continues to make faces, which was really taking much of the groom’s attention. When a boy sung for the couple, Mr. Bean slept and made noise which disturbed the whole congregation. Lastly, he took the bride’s father’s stool which he was supposed to kneel on. As a result the poor man hurt himself but still was able to smile for the sake of the couple. Nevertheless, the father and the groom finally had enough when Bean destroyed the dress of the bride. The groom tried to get even with the main character but he was able to avoid the physical attacks and managed to escape. In real life, such circumstances indeed happen. Perhaps, they might not be as obvious as those portrayed by Mr. Bean but, they nearly as rude. It is believed that literary works such as the story of Mr. Bean are not just simply made for people to just laugh at but that, they are deliberately composed to show some objective. Perhaps the exaggerations in the stories of Mr. Bean are created to make people think about them and come to realize the realities of such depictions. As a result then, Mr. Bean should not just be seen as an instrument for entertainment but to bring the human characteristics of people as well for them to be able to live more peacefully and graciously in an increasingly maddening world where virtues are fast disappearing.
