Number] Movie: Infernal Affairs Introduction Infernal affairs is considered as the master piece movie in the Hong Kong film industry and is famous for its unique and elegant story, acting, shooting techniques and action scenes. This movie has colossal importance as it was responsible for the revival of Hong Kong film industry which was in decline. This movie got huge international reception all over the globe which boosted up the morale of Hong Kong film makers and gave them a vision to implant more creativity in their cinema. The story line along with direction was magnificent; this is why it was considered for the trilogy. Its record business in Hong Kong is considered as one of the most successful films of the country. Andrew Lau and Alan Mak directed this action thriller with a superb cast. Anthony Wong, Andy Lau, Tony Leung and Eric Tsang were its lead cast members. The direction, conception, formation, shooting and execution was splendid which grabbed people’s attention. The film so much inspired the Hollywood directors that they had to adopt its concept in their blockbuster movie, The Departed which won the Academy Award. Infernal Affairs unveils some of the tragic scenario’s prevailing in society and gives a very strong message to the masses. Movie has potency, disparity and vital issue rising which makes it prestigious and distinctive. The Directors The movie has two directors who have made this master blaster; Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. The real strength has been given to the story line by magnificent direction of these two guys. Both of them were pretty much concerned about the creativity and visual effects invasion in the movie. Alan Mak was the main behind action scenes as he gave his tremendous insight about the action scenes propagation. Andrew Lau had a huge impact in the direction of photography, choreography and arrangement of things. The movie was clearly a brilliant duet by both these men which made it bravura indeed. Andrew Lau is an eminent figure in the Hong Kong film industry who is a director, producer and cinematographer. He started his career as a cinematographer in the 1980’s. His continuous struggle and hardship led him into the direction field. Lau was a credible name in crime and action movies and he loves to do films on these subjects. He is renowned for making films in different genres as he has been working in Hong Kong, China and United States. After the release of Infernal Affairs in 2002; Lau got a huge boom and high profile among the film industry. His creativity is acknowledged and accepted around the globe. The focal area of movie direction of Lau remained the triad society. The purpose of the director exemplifies that he wants to unveil the hidden truth behind these kinds of underground societies. The objectives, mottos and the game plan of their criminology, killings and exploitation of people and their tragic ends; Lau interests lies in this field. Due to his glorious insight regarding this specific field; Infernal Affairs became a huge success. After years of struggle and great effort with other directors and producers, Andrew Lau established his own company Basic Pictures. The first picture under the banner of Basic pictures was Infernal Affairs which got immense success. The main concept of presenting the Triad society specifically came from Lau which created a mystical loom. The potency and mightiness of Lau lies in the making of crime films. His viewpoint of watching the illegal and immoral acts is entirely different from other directors. He presents such a scenario in which elimination of this curse from the society can also take place. Infernal Affairs came out to be gigantic accomplishment of Andrew Lau which made his path clear to incept in Hollywood film making. Alan Mak was the second director of Infernal Affairs who has worked as an actor, writer, producer and director in several movies. His writing skills are inspiring and stirring which makes him high-status in the Hong Kong film industry. Mak also wrote the script of Infernal Affairs with Chong. This was the first ever project of Mak and Lau together as directors which was a massive achievement. Both of them acknowledged skills of each other’s and thus they went on for the Infernal Affairs Trilogy and other several filming expeditions. Mak was highly rated among the industry due to his brilliance in screenplay writing and direction. He also got the Leader of the year award in sports category due to his massive extracurricular skills. Mak was nominated for several awards after the critical response of his tremendous movies. Alan went on to write numerous scripts for movies. In the movie Infernal Affairs, Mak is considered as the backbone because he also assisted in screenplay and direction. Lead Cast Infernal Affairs had a wonderful lead cast which ensured movie success. Their comprehensive acting was eye catching and contagious. The glorious acting efforts of characters are commendable and praiseworthy. Andy Lau acted as the senior inspector Lau Min-king in the movie. He was the spy in the police force and gave necessary information to the Triad gang about police activities. His acting was brilliant as he played the role very well. Andy Lau is Hong Kong’s highly rated and successful actor. He has a legacy of the most award winning actor. His admirable negative role in Infernal Affairs took him to new paramount of success. He was one of the most successful actors in the whole star casting of the movie. Dialogue delivery and actions scenes performed by him are truly a class act. Tony Leung acted as Chan Wing-Yan in the movie. He played the role of an undercover cop in the triad gang. His role was highly appreciated and respected by the people due to his brilliant acting throughout the movie. The heroic role played by Chan in the movie distinguishes him as had a very important position in the movie. The action scenes and spying acts prevailed by Tony are creditable. The tragic ending of Chan in the movie gives a notion that the good one dies but in fact he got divinity by taking a bullet into his head and as a result Lau became a loyal police officer. Anthony Wong played the role Superintendent Wong Chi-Shang in Infernal Affairs. The importance of this role can be explained through the fact that he was the mind behind Chan’s act. He let Chan as an undercover cop and a mole into Hon’s gang. His brilliant acting as a leader, master and trainer is remembered by critics too. Wong gave the exact game plan to Wong that how to make an impression on Hon and get inside messages. Wong sacrificed his life by saving his subordinate Chan on the roof top. Anthony Wong has a huge fan following in Hong Kong. Eric Tsang played the legendary role of Hon Sam who is the Triad Leader. His acting as a triad boss is highly pleasing and appreciated by the masses. The negativity brought by Eric into his role is epic. He remained in the lime light throughout the movie as his words acted as the final verdict. His criminology thinking and perception was so real that critics became short of words while describing his role in the movie. His sub ordinates were Lau, Chan and B. His death in the movie gives an impression that’s an end of a chapter but in fact it was a new beginning. Shooting Methodology The shooting of this movie was a foundation in the revival of Hong Kong film industry. Directors gave their best in the shooting of the movie. Producers spend a high amount of money of hi-fi speed camera’s which were of colossal monetary amount. The methodology applied by the directors was distinctive and matchless in Hong Kong industry. They utilized several cameras for taking one shot and then merged them marvellously. Editing team must be applauded in making this do so. The inauguration of latest technological creative themes was first time ever seen in Hong Kong cinema. Director’s approach for shooting the movie was tremendous. The action scenes which took place in Hon’s gang with the police force were of high class. Wong and Chan scene on the roof top took several directorial angles as Andrew gave his expert opinion on it. Andrew has a good knowledge about the triad gang so he created an exact environment and took those scenes in such a manner that everything portrayed was perfect. The shooting methodology was lauded by the Hong Kong film community. Alan’s writing also gave life to the characters and created an atmosphere of actual criminology scene. Action scenes are the most difficult to shoot as cameraman has to take a diverse horizon to examine each and every element. Andrew helped as the director of photography too and made perfect adjustments accordingly. The high involvement of team crew, directors and writers are required for the film success and all of these gave their hundred percent which is why they got fruitfulness soon after its release. Critical Evaluation The movie gave a perfect new start to the Hong Kong cinema which was in demise. Director’s efforts must be recognized as they were also involved in writing, photography, screenplay and cinematography. Their presence of the set was oxygen for the cast and crew. Leaps and bounds success of Infernal Affairs was clearly due to these two men; Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. The film was shot in the era when triad gangs were at their peak and headlines appeared on television and newspapers every day. Their strong bonding and connections with police officers was the biggest concern for the governments at that time and society had to make its role too. Releasing such a movie in that time was a big effort indeed by the writer as he came up with the concrete problems prevailing in the society. The critical acceptance of the movie included all the essential features. The filming took place at that time was perfect as technological advancements in cinematography was invading the industry and director fully utilized the edge he had. Also the acting of Tsang and Lau was brilliant and mind blowing. They gave strength and a strong way to the film in the industry. Lau also maintained a record of the most successful actor in Hong Kong and he proved this so by giving his best in the movie. Each and every object of the movie was perfect as the blend created was magnificent. At first the connection and understanding between directors was wonderful. Then the actors casted were the best of Hong Kong and had a huge international acceptance. Creativity and filming of the film gave the final essential spice, which was the reason of triumph.
