The Appropriation and Hybridity in Taiwanese and American Art - Thesis Example

New pieces of art will be created to substantiate and illustrate this new hybrid art.There is no literature that has detailed records about how was oriental art influenced by western modernist movement and vice versa. Furthermore, there has not been much written on the inter-relationship of oriental and occidental art. Instead, most of the research mainly concentrates upon stylistic monographs of painters and artworks.This thesis investigates and delineates the similarities and disparities between western modernism and Taiwanese Ink-wash painting specifically in their representations and use of pictorial space, time and colour.

Abstract expressionism and Surrealism and the conventional development of modern ink-wash painting during the period from 1949 to 2000 is the mainstream thought here. It witnesses the involvement of the comparison of the formal characteristics of both the traditions, inclusive of their formal aesthetic languages and their philosophical backgrounds. A prospect for developing a dialect with western art and traditional Chinese ink-wash painting can clearly be scrutinized here. With a view to generating an innovative hybrid art, which not only accounts for the phenomenon of how western artistic elements have been coalesced in an experimental approach within the detailed Chinese and Taiwanese conventional paintings, this project enlarges this emerging practice.

There is also another focus to consider, which involves some prominent Taiwanese modern ink-wash painters, which can be divided into two groups: depicting-Creating Ink-Wash Painting School and Image-configuration Ink-Wash Painting School.The idea of the school of Depicting-Creating Ink-wash Painting focuses on the returning spirit to nature and the communication between spirit and nature. Their works have a unique oriental aesthetic taste, but still, try to seek for nourishments from the western art movements.

 That is, they attempted to not just carry on the tradition, but also to be sensitive to the current times
