Deborah Butterfield – Orion 1988. Observation The horse sculpture has utilized different point of views on visual elements. The exterior parts of the horse sculpture are made of scrap metal from a red car. The color and saturation aspects of the sculpture make the horse and material to be easily identifiable unlike in other artists where the audience has to be provided with further information on their artwork. Based on the elements of composition, the sculpture has had an aesthetic placement of its materials (Efland 120). The metal has been carefully shaped in the form of a horse’s body. The center of interest of the art is the body and torso that clearly resemble a horse. The ring of metal at its neck also presents the straps of leather and rope used to provide support to the horse rider. The scale of the art also presents a relation of the sculpture to visual arts. Its size resembles that of a mature horse. As a result, the scale offers the audience with a better view of the sculpture unlike in other small-scaled sculptures. Additionally, the balancing aspect has also been adopted in Deborahs artwork. The Balance has been emphasized where it has provided the composition with a stable structure that can stand on its own. Point of view Elements of the design have been emphasized on the sculpture including the space occupied, texture, and harmony among others. Her sculpture presents a smooth surface despite the perception that her artwork is m from scrap materials. The harmony is also emphasized due to its composition of similar units. Unity has also been emphasized on the artwork to the constituency of material used in the sculpture. The materials have been strategically places to present a unified artwork. However, the tattoo may present the Christian culture due to the presence of Mary. Consequently, the picture can be categorized to present the Christians to the embracement of key symbols in the culture. The red petals on the left-hand side of the picture may symbolize love in the society or mostly Christian society in the visual composition of the artwork. The pink and red petals, on the other hand, may symbolize gratitude, love, and appreciation. Principles of the composition design include the contrast, rhythm, balance, the centre of interest, and the direction of movement. The contrast involves the use of different visual compositions to emphasize different backgrounds of the picture. A higher contrast may be caused by the difference in lines, tones, and texture. Delilahs picture has different backgrounds that can be seen as red and pink petals. Additionally, behind the petals is a dark color that may symbolize a sad mood in the picture. The most eye-catching aspect in the picture is the hand and the tattoo, which is the first feature to attract the audiences attention having more importance than other parts of the composition depending on the colors, and emphasize. It is important to note that Delilahs artwork has a higher contrast due to the composition differences. The directional movement in the photo can show a rhythm in the colors of the petals. The black colored background presents a constant platform where the flow of colors and other visual effects revolve. At the bottom, the petals appear to be darker than the other red petals; hence, could symbolize a sad mood such as blood. Additionally, the directional movement can be used to show the happenings in the photo due to the subsequent flow of information through colors and other visual compositions. Point of view She has been actively involved in the photographic printmaking and digital imaging in her artwork. Delilahs work includes the presentation of unlikely relationships between artworks. The differences can be observed in the viewing of the pictures, representation of ideas and conceptualizing the situation. Most of her artworks have been printed through the ink jet services. Her artwork has incorporated various views in the same picture based on various principles of the visual arts discipline. Visual elements that include the basic observable things in the photo have been utilized. The elements include an arm with what looks like a tattoo of the sculpture Mary Mother of Jesus, pink petals on the left and red and pink ones on the right-hand side. Observation Unity and depth have been embraced in Nash’s portrait through the incorporation of different aspects. The work appears undivided despite the presentation of the landscape with the main view of the picture that includes houses. The depth has also been emphasized where the whole scenery has been placed in one portrait. It shows the homes and vegetation in the front of the painting and identifies the background that comprises of the mountains. Elements of composition such as the directional movement balance and the center of interest have also been highlighted. The center of interest is the front view that is stressed by different and brighter colors, unlike the background that has dark colors. As a result, the directional of movement of the audience may start from the foreground moving to the back due to the flow of colors. Point of view The artwork presents different moods in the represented community. The visual effects of the portrait can tell the moods. For example, the dark clouds in the background may symbolize a community that frequently experiences rains due to its mountain’s proximity. The variation of colors in the vegetation next to the homestead may explain the different farming activities of various crops. Nashs preference on the scale of his work was to equalize visually all the aspects in the portrait to fit the small size. The artwork does not have a specific signature but varies from landscapes to community activities to paintings on the people of New Mexico.
