Stella McCartney on sustainability al Affiliations Sustainability can be taken to mean indulging into an activity with a cautious mind without causing any vulnerability to the animals, environment and economic exploitation to the people. For the case of designers the most prominent things they need to consider for sustainability are satisfaction of their consumers, the care for the environment and the ecological make up such as the animals and plants. For many past years, sustainability, quality and fast emergence in fashion trends has become an issue among the fashion designers across the world. Elements such as the environment, human beings and the ecological make up are some of the major factors which should be given sustainability as far as fashion designing is concerned (Moisander, 2002). Sustainability is a fundamental social necessity today. Majority of the customers who are engaged in the purchase of the fashion products are obliged to put into consideration the effect of their product on the environment, the economy and the lives of other animals. Practitioner Our practitioner in this study is Stella McCartney. The designer is a British born; she is a daughter to the famous pop star Paul McCartney and the animal right activist Linda McCartney. Stella started the art of designing at her teens. She won awards from the art even though she explains that she did not inherit the fame from her parents who were already on the media scenes due to their respective lines of duties which greatly exposed them. Stella’s fame was her own making. Issue connected with Stella’s work The major issue arising from Stella’s work is the problem of choosing new materials and trying to make it blend well with the satisfaction of the people who depends on the products. Another problem is the social view which touches on the people and the environmental things as well as other animals. There are many people who are against the use of animal products in the fashion wares. Stella incorporated her mother’s view which considered the rights of the animals. She was against the idea that animals were mistreated in the name of extraction of the raw materials for the designing companies. Because many companies used animal products such as leather and fur, her view obviously became an issue in the designing sector. Stella was for sustainability and for that anything which posed a threat to other ecological make up was not good for her. Animal injustices are a global concern. It has been established that many animals undergo a lot of suffering from human beings who depend on their skin for the fashion designs. India and china are the major exporters of these products to European countries and the Americas. It is believed that over five million animals are killed annually in the whole world to give these raw materials something which Stella strongly condemns. In addition, there is an issue raised by Stella on the sustainability of the environment. Because Stella chose to work with the plant materials she partnered with a Non- governmental Organization going by the name Canopy with an aim of seeing that the cellulose fabrics from her company meets the sustainability values in the next three years. In ensuring lucidity in the distribution of these fabric products, the company has initiated a program dubbed fashion loved forest to include the environmental charge on the fashion products. All these evidences shows the stand of Stella’s company as far as the sustainability of the environment and its elements are concerned According to her company statement, it is clear that Stella and other stakeholders are under obligation to see into it that sustainability of the resources that they use as well as the consequences of those resources to the environment. In order to that there is friendliness in the eco system she designed an eyewear glasses which is more natural and less hazardous to the environment. Another designer working on sustainability Felder Felder’s company Another fashion designing company working for sustainability is the Felder Felder’s Company. This company focuses on the social factors such as the leather shunning by some people as one of the issues affecting them. But because they know that leather products are more appealing they have evolved to work with polyester at least to mimic the leather outfits. This not only ensures sustainability of the people but also ensures that the population of these animals and their well being is maintained. Managed by twin sisters, Annette and Daniela, this company has ensured sustainability control by working on fashion designs which are less cruel to animals and they work at home. They implement their objectivity by using faux- leather apart from that they have embraced the use of polyester. The main reason for the use of polyester is because it can be recycled. According to Anne McCourt this is the best solution in seeing that they can copy leather like designs without necessarily involving the animal skin which is the notorious cause for the death of many animals across the world. Of course it is true that sustainability in a given environment is achieved when there is existence of all the elements including animals. It is true in this case that the designers put into account the sustainability by not causing any harm to its elements. They are affected by the fact that the sustainability is a global affair which affects everybody. Even though the company is striving to ensure the sustainability they have not put into consideration sustenance on the plants as they don’t have the measures and mechanisms through which they can see that plants are not under any threat. With this company neglecting the importance of plants in their sustainability endeavors they cannot be considered to have good will in the wake to ensuring environmental sustainability. The global warming which is currently the world’s biggest threat has not been taken into account making the company less reactive in fighting the environmental hazards. Just like in Stella’s situation the, company is obliged to ensure that there is sustainability from its operations. They can consider doing some of their work in the closed environments such as homes to prevent the hazards which might affect the ecosystem which in this case is the human life. By putting the policies to prevent the injustices done to animals in search for raw materials, they show the high degree of care to the plants. Comparison on Stella McCartney and Felder Felder Companies on sustainability On Stella case there is consideration for both the plants and animals in the sustainability issue. She is for the idea that the plants should be used in a controlled manner to see into it that there is no threat to the plants. On the side of Felder Company the consideration is only on the animals but not on the plants. The issue emerging from both cases is almost the same. Both the companies are facing the challenge of both the social and environmental challenges arising from different organizations. The environmental factors affect almost all the living things, for these companies there is environmental vulnerability coming from the emissions and waste from the companies and also the physical destruction of the environmental settings. Both the companies face the problem of fighting the emissions from the companies and the industries as a whole. For Stella the fight for the animal’s consideration in the fashion designing is something which was inherited from the mother who was an activist.
