According to Wedekind, Lulu exposes the characters of women at the time in different ways. She is perceived differently by male actors in the play. Lulu is portrayed as being beautiful and always pursuing men throughout the play. Her charm and intellectual sharpness leave men in awe. This shows that women roles were only to make men world comfortable. The play does not relate women to any other roles that are dominated by men. Moreover, while men are depicted as doctors, artist and even actors women are displayed as a symbol of beauty (Skinner 16). Wedekind portrays women as domineering over men. For example, when Lulu husband, Schon visits an artist to procure a portrait of her, she falls in love with the artist. This attests that women were promiscuous. She later leaves her husband for her newly found man, but the relationship was short lived (Skinner 17).
In the ‘Devil is a Woman,’ Sternberg’s displays the Romantic tradition of the 19th century. He continues to dispose the persona of women in the society as having erotic sensibility and as a source of attraction to men (Perriam et al 76). According to Sternberg, Concha is characterized as an object of attraction. Women are portrayed similarly for pleasure. In the film, Romero is displayed surrounded by women. Antonio (Romero) is overpowered by beautiful women and is in constant search for more beautiful women. Furthermore, Concha and Carmen display women as having constant power of seduction. They represent women as having a dominant power of sexuality while men are displayed as being violent and always seeking pleasure with women.
