Extract of sample "Zero Degree of Writing and Other Subversive Moments - an Interview with NI Haifeng"

Ni Haifeng makes a good point when she states that she did not really understand Chinese artists until she moved outside of China. The author discusses perception and how Chinese artists are perceived by people in the West. The biggest point that she makes without specifically answering a question is by saying that Chinese artists see themselves as artists first and Chinese second. Another interesting point that she makes is that tradition is often thought of as a bad thing because of its tendency to be rigid and outdated, but in actual fact, tradition is something that should be celebrated. I happen to agree with all the points that Ni Haifeng makes about culture. She provides a refreshing view about how culture should be viewed and to discover one’s own culture by experiencing another.

Ni Haifeng goes on to talk about her experience as being one of the few artists in China after the Cultural Revolution.
