Beckett believes that someone deliberately hid his paperwork to give the firm an excuse to fire him and that the firing is actually as a result of his diagnosis with AIDS. He asks several attorneys to take his case, including personal injury lawyer Joe Miller (Washington). Miller is an admitted homophobe and knows little about Beckett's disease. As the case goes before the court, the partners of the firm take the stand, each committing perjury by claiming that Beckett was incompetent and that he had deliberately tried to hide his condition.

The defense repeatedly suggests that Beckett had invited his illness through his homosexual acts and was therefore not a victim. In the course of testimony, it is revealed that the partner who had noticed Beckett's lesion had previously worked with a woman who had contracted AIDS after a blood transfusion and so should have recognized the lesion as relating to AIDS. During cross-examination, Beckett is confronted with his inactions of concealing his illness, his supposed incompetence, and the origin of his contracting AIDS; the latter of which has gone unexplained to everyone, including Miguel, until this point.

He admits that he was originally planning to tell his partners that he was gay, but he soon changed his mind after hearing them make off-color homophobic jokes in the sauna of a health club. Beckett eventually collapses in court shortly after finishing cross-examination. During his hospitalization, the jury voted in his favor, awarding him back pay, damages for pain and suffering, and punitive damages. There are five concepts within the video that match the concepts presented in class. The effects of HIV on the immune system vary from person to person.

A person like Miguel may carry the virus without any symptom whereas a there person may experience Full-blown AIDS-like Beckett. The progression of full-blown AIDS usually leads to death within a few years just like happened to Beckett. Transmission of HIV may happen numerous fashions but in Philadelphia, after declining to take the case, Miller immediately visits his doctor to find out how he might get Aids from Beckett. The doctor explains the methods of AIDS infection. Diagnosis of HIV infection and AIDS is often represented by lesions and flulike cough as noted in the movie.

The theme about prevention of HIV/AIDS is underscored when asked about the truth of how he got infected, Miguel confirms that he engaged in anonymous sex with another man at a pornographic movie theatre and passed the virus to Beckett. Here we discuss three of these concepts in depth. HIV can affect the immune system to produce white blood cells, leukocytes that kill pathogens. Leukocytes recognize pathogens by their surface fragments, known as antigens, to which antibodies attach themselves. The immune system promotes inflammation, which allows for the expanded flow of leukocytes to the region.

The progression of HIV/AIDS starts with mild flu-like symptoms that may be experienced shortly after infection most people are symptom-free for years while others may enter an asymptomatic state. AIDS is connected with wasting syndrome and certain opportunistic diseases such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), Kaposi’s sarcoma, toxoplasmosis of the brain, and Herpes simplex. If untreated, AIDS almost always leads to death within a few years. The Transmission of HIV may occur through, vaginal, anal, or oral-genital intercourse, sharing hypodermic needles or being stuck by a needle, blood transfusions, and organ and tissue transplants, artificial insemination, and during childbirth.
