The budget for the movie is estimated to be around 26 USD. The film is also notable because it is based on a true story. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Daniel Lugo, Dwayne Johnson as Paul Doyle, Anthony Mackie as Adrian "Noel" Doorbal and Tony Shalhoub as Victor Kershaw. The movie is based on a series of articles detailing real events written by Pete Collins and published in Miami New Times in 1999 and complied by Collins in the book Pain and Gain: This is a True story released in 2013. The story line is about crimes that were committed by an organized group in the United States of America whose majority members were body builders affiliated with the Sun Gym and referred to themselves as the Sun Gym Gang.
Among the crimes the gang committed includes kidnapping, torture, extortion and murder of several victims. The main Characters starred in the movie are renowned body builders so as to portray the real body builders who performed the events and are now serving prison sentences in the USA. I personally feel the movie is a masterpiece despite the budget constraints it had and that the fact that the film is based on a true story spices it all up. . A survey of the film reviews and critical opinions about the film reveals a wide range of issues that critics raise concerning the movie and their expectations.
The movie was highly anticipated right from the time the director Michael bay stated after the release of Transformers (revenge of the fallen) in 2009 that he would embark on a new project. The production process commenced in 2012 after paramount pictures agreed to fund the budget. Given Bay’s reputation in the industry, critics and viewers had higher expectations about the movie. Upon its release in 2013, numerous critics including amateurs and professionals rushed to give their view on blogs, review sites, magazines, newspapers and journals, both online and in print.
There is there a wide range of articles about the film including promotional materials, informational content, as well as trade and craft. Amateur content about the film was mostly written in blogs across the internet. These amateur articles mainly focused on providing personal opinions of the movie as well as providing readers with valuable information about the film. One such amateur film critic Joshua the anarchist praises the film on his blog, http://joshuatheanarchist.blogspot.com by pointing out that it is one of the greatest pieces of work from Michael Bay.
He however notes certain annoying trends that he finds in almost all movies directed by Bay, among them sexual obsessions and what he refers as juvenile humor.
