The hospitality development and design business today is still very much involved in the realization of leading brand identities. Large hotel groups like Thompson, Hilton, Sheraton, the Marriot group, and the Disney organization have a long tradition of quality and style to maintain, and so they provide a platform for new ideas to reach a global audience. One noticeable trend is a tendency to enhance increasingly urban locations with natural features, such as the lobby of the Hilton Pattaya in Thailand, which is situated within a shopping complex.

The leading Hilton designer Larry Traxler states “we wanted guests entering the space to experience the same tranquillity and freedom they feel at the beach.” (Schiowitz, 2011) In this case, white recomposed stone and white oak are used to recreate the light colors of sand and pebbles. This reflects also a trend towards sustainable and low carbon solutions, in order to meet increasing concern with environmental issues.The global financial crisis has meant that design costs are an important factor in current design trends, but inventive use of recycled and local materials, as for example in the Green Leaf Niseko Village in Hokkaido, Japan with its “rehabbed ski gondolas” and rooftop beer garden with wraparound wood benches (Alati, 2011) demonstrate that style can be achieved within tight budgetary constraints.
