Personal Essays An adolescence spent with a single mother, with an alcohol problem, made my completion of High School a Herculean task by itself –a college degree seemed far beyond the realm of possibility. As an Honor Roll student, I was determined to meet this challenge. Mr. Kates, my Science teacher and mentor, to whom I will remain eternally grateful, persuaded me that dedication and hard work can make anything possible. I went on to graduate with a BS, aided by innumerable stints of waitressing and teaching exercise classes, and have emerged with the unshakable belief that I am the architect of my own life. (103 words).
2. Adventure racing, which I adore, is the quintessential team sport. The team is only as strong as its weakest member, and trust in each other is an absolute pre-requisite for success. As the team leader, I have seen my team through everything, from blistered feet to failed batteries, rough terrain to rainstorms, lost maps to exhaustion. I have shown my team-mates that mental strength and self-confidence, combined with a never-say-die attitude, is the only infallible navigation tool. We have gone from the brink of failure to the exhilaration of success, and I have led by example: which I believe is the best way to lead! (105 words).
3. A community draws strength from its environment. I am passionate about the environment, and its contribution to the betterment of my community. I have served as a volunteer with the Central Oregon Trail Alliance, the Friends of the Deschutes River, and the Smith Rock Parks, getting down to the basics: cleaning, picking up and digging! With Girls On The Run, I have passed on my love for running, as the path to empowerment and self-confidence, to other girls. Living in harmony with nature, and testing the limits on one’s physical and mental endurance, is my way to an inclusive, caring community. (101 words).
4. My love for travelling, which has taken me to twenty-two countries, has made me appreciate diverse cultures and the underlying goodness of people all over the world. I have studied Spanish for five years, and have spent a summer in beautiful Mexico: it was a learning experience beyond compare. I threw myself into everything, from salsa to mole sauce. My seventy year old hostess, who lived, shopped and cooked independently, was also a devout Catholic and doting mother, and a revelation to me! I have come to acknowledge that there is no one, cast-iron, way to do the right thing: diversity is a gift for mankind. (106 words).
5 My travels in the Middle East, particularly in Egypt, brought home to me the sad fact that the gender bias, which is so alien to us Americans, is very much a part of the life of women in many parts of the world. As a woman of no religious affiliation, with uncovered head and independent attitude, I was dismayed, and even intimidated, by the hostility I sometimes encountered. However, I was deeply moved by the religious faith of the people, and am now more determined than ever to work for underprivileged women in developing countries. I am convinced that education is the woman’s path to empowerment. (106 words). Read More

My Personal Fitness Journey

... My Personal Fitness Journey About three months ago, I woke up to get ready for work and pulled on my khakis. When I tried to button them, though, they simply wouldn’t fasten. I had been breathing in sharply when putting them on for a while, but on this particular morning there just wasn’t a way to get them to button. I ran to my closet and found a couple of other pairs of pants. Luckily, there was a very forgiving pair of pleated slacks in the back of the closet that I was able to wear after running an iron over them. The night before, I had thrown an entire Di Giorno meat lover’s pizza into the oven and then eaten it, piece after piece, while sitting in front of the television. Then I had moved over to the computer to get some work done...

Personal Effectiveness

One of the most difficult prospects is identifying where your strengths lie and in which new role you would be good at. There are hundreds of skills that you developed over time, but it is even more challenging to combine which tasks you are good at and which ones you enjoy the most. The reconciliation of both will determine your strengths. I am trying to identify my weaknesses and strengths all the time in order to make the most of my career opportunities. Besides, I realize that it is easier to focus on and develop your strengths than trying to eliminate weaknesses. Every time I try to engage in a new activity, I am always naturally worried that I won't have the necessary skills for a new activity or responsibility.

Implications for Personal Investment

The assumption of perfect rationality can be rebutted by the fact that rationality is not the sole driver of human behaviour. On the contrary, our behaviour is contingent upon emotions such as love, fear, pain, and pleasure etc. Human beings only use their intellectual power to achieve or avoid these emotional outcomes (Pompian 2006). Secondly, the assumption of self-interested is also not deemed to be practical because many sociological studies have shown that people are not always self-interested. Had this been the case, then there would not have been a single philanthropist in the world, even people would have avoided negative behaviour such as suicide and alcoholism. The final assumption of perfect information also does not ho...

The subsequent framework would engender a theoretically determined structure of aims thus bringing up and addressing related issues.

Management functions - planning, leading, organizing and controlling or coordinating – have both a theoretical and conceptual determination and their functional level parameters include such organizational goal-related outcomes (Cleland & Gareis, 2006). For instance, the following process diagram of a personal management framework shows the managerial functions can be more meaningful in an individualized organizational context where the manger’s own capabilities and skills are brought into sharp focus in comparison with the daily and routine functions.

Personal Choice: A Comparative Analysis

Published in 1915, the poem’s elements of individual freedom and choice owe much to the nation’s foundational thought that can be traced from Thomas Jefferson to the very core of Ralph Waldo Emerson and can even be seen to embody a European existentialistic spirit. Today, Frost’s poem represents us all, whenever we face the diverging paths in our own lives.

The essential symbolism behind The Road Not Taken is the freedom of choice. Frost advances this metaphor by comparing the decision-making process to, “Two roads diverged(ing) in a yellow wood.” It’s notable that Frost uses the ‘roads’ for his symbolic task over the perhaps more clichéd choice of ‘paths&rsqu...

In fact, most people would see him as a computer guy who made some revolutionary innovations in his field. However, for me, Steve Jobs is more than just an iconic figure in the computer world. I see me him as an inspiration. His message to the class of 2005 in Stanford University inspired me to stay focused and reach for my goals. In his message, he said that “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Dont lose faith. The Elliott Controversy: Personal Rifts in the Seventh Cavalry

An attack plan was devised that would surprise the Indians in their most vulnerable state—during winter at early dawn in which the enemies were still asleep. It was, in fact, a complete surprise which resulted in the ‘massacre’ of the villagersIndeed, the battle was regarded to be the only notable clash during the 1868-69 winter campaign.

The battle has received much criticism because of two important issues—the genocidal nature of the attack and the major lapse of judgment by their commander: the abandonment of Major Elliott. It is, however, the death of Major Elliott and his troops at the Battle of Washita which became the most controversial, at least within the regiment itself. It caused deep...
