Actors at different levels of the organization are therefore brought together by the routines. Another aspect of consideration in the nature of routines is the thought that routines can just be a mindless following of a way of action and can also be seen as mindful efforts directed towards the realization of set goals or objectives (Becker, 2004. p.646-648).
Technology has taken a toll on the shape of organizational routines (Rudd, n.d. p. 2). Organizations have been in a race in adapting to new technologies. New communication mechanisms and novel technologies have enabled organizations to work more efficiently and differently. With new innovations, better productive modes and information storage are enhanced. However, coping with the current level of technology and innovation change is proving a hard task to tackle. This is because new technologies are constantly changing in the market and thus becoming quite expensive in keeping up with the trend. New technologies such as computers, laptops and tablets computers, web 2.0 applications and smartphones have over time replaced paperwork in offices and are easier and safer in data storage and retrieval. The speed of doing transactions is equally highly boosted by technological advancement and organizations are expected to perform smarter and better in the adoption of such technologies.
Nevertheless, organizations are known to have already set procedures of performance. The already established patterns always pose a challenge to any organizational decision of adoption to new procedures. Organizations have routines that are recurrent, persuasive and are collective in nature. The embeddedness and specificity nature of the routines already embraced by organizations always are hard and consequential to leave for new technologies. This is because the routines take time to develop and to pass over in the course of an organization’s perpetuity. The effects of new technology on organizations are profound. Adoption and the use of new technologies often bring about the disruption of production procedures and this may adversely affect the organization in the short run. This can be explained by the time taken to learn the use of these new technologies (Röcker, 2009. p. 17). ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
