Process Laboratory Experiment - Heat Transfer in a Plate Heat Exchanger Summary Through a plate heat exchanger (PHE) setup, we had been able to measure properties such as inlet and outlet temperatures for the cold water as well as its flowrate which was to be held uniform for each run. At the end of the experiment, we went over the rest of the instructions toward fulfillment of the main objective. In this endeavor, we were expected to come up with full understanding of the principle behind the operation of a plate heat exchanger and how its overall advantage and econmy compares with the other heat-transfer designs that are widely used in industrial processes. Introduction In chemical process industries, heat exchangers are normally used when a fluid material is required to settle at a specific temperature before or after a number of stages have been passed. Basically, the mechanism involved is a transfer of heat between low and medium-pressure fluids that are at different initial and final temperatures wherein one fluid goes through the tube side while the other proceeds along the shell side of the exchanger under parallel or counter-current flow. Double-Pipe and Shell and Tube heat exchangers are widely present in chemical plant activities though plate heat exchangers (PHEs) are found specially satisfactory and efficient in carrying out the desired heat transfer. The plates over which the fluids spread out in the process possess greater surface area to allow exchange of heat at the optimum and this is proposed to be the chief advantage of PHEs compared with that of the conventional equipment. Theory of Heat Exchangers Used by Engineers in Chemical Industries The heat exchangers used by chemical engineers cannot be characterized by any one design; indeed, the varieties of such equipment are endless. However, the one characteristic common to most heat exchangers is the transfer of heat from a hot phase to a cold phase with the two phases being separated by a solid boundary. In using such an equipment, two mechanisms of heat transfer have already been established: Molecular -- the transfer of heat by molecular action; this is referred to as conduction; Turbulent -- the transfer of heat by a mixing process; this is usually referred to as convection. A third mechanism of heat transfer that is common but has not yet been discussed is radiation, which is the transfer of heat by emission and absorption of energy without physical contact. Unlike conduction or convection, which depend upon physical contact for thermal-energy transfer, radiation depends upon electromagnetic waves as a means for transferring thermal energy from a hot source to a low-temperature sink. The simplest type of heat exchanger is the double-pipe heat exchanger which is essentially two concentric pipes with one fluid flowing through the center pipe while the other fluid moves co-currently or counter-currently in the annular space. The length of each section is usually limited to standard pipe length, so that if an appreciable heat-transfer surface is required, banks of sections are frequently used. If the required area is too large, a double-pipe exchanger is not recommended. The use of a double-pipe heat exchanger is not limited to liquid-liquid heat exchange but may also be used for gas-liquid exchange and for gas-to-gas exchange. When the required heat-transfer surface is large, the recommended type of exchanger is the sell-and-tube variety. In this type of heater or cooler, large heat-transfer surface can be achieved economically and practically by placing tubes in a bundle; the ends of the tubes are mounted in a tube sheet. This is very commonly accomplished by expanding the end of the tube into a close-fitting hole in the tube sheet by a process called “rolling”. The resultant tube bundle is then enclosed by a cylindrical casing (the shell), through which the second fluid flows around and through the tube bundle. The fluid flowing through the tubes enters a header or channel where it is distributed through the tubes in parallel flow and leaves the unit through another header. Either the hot or the cold fluid may flow in the shell of the exchanger surrounding the tubes. Parallel flow through all tubes at a low velocity gives a low heat-transfer coefficient and low pressure drop. For higher rates of heat transfer, multi-pass operation may be used. Complexity in design sometimes results in expense in fabrication that must be balanced against improved performance and another disadvantage of the multi-pass exchanger is the added frictional loss due to higher linear velocities and the entrance and exit losses in the headers. Plate Heat Exchangers (PHEs) Source: Foust, et al. Principles of Unit Operations, 2nd ed. Plate Heat Exchangers (PHE) / Extended-Surface Mechanism and Economy If heat exchange is occurring between two fluids where one fluid has a very high resistance to heat transfer in comparison to the other, the higher-resistance fluid controls the rate of heat transfer. Such cases occur, for example, in the heating of air by steam or in the heating of a very viscous oil, flowing in laminar flow, by a molten salt mix. The relative magnitude of the heat-transfer coefficient is about 10 for the oil or air, compared with 2000 for the steam or salt. This poor heat-transfer situation will require much transfer surface for a reasonable flow rate of air or oil. In order to compensate for the high resistance of the oil or air, the heat-transfer surface exposed to these fluids may be increased by extension of the surface, as in the addition of fins to the outside of the tube whereby the fins are referred to as an ‘extended surface’. They increase the transfer area substantially in a given amount of space. Even though the first Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) was introduced to industry over sixty years ago, it is only in recent years that our concept has come into its own and this may be attributed in part to energy cost and productivity expansion. Competitive pressures on industry to adopt cost-cutting measures and improve performance have figured significantly. Nowadays, process engineering designers recognize that where working pressures and temperatures are moderate - in the 25 bar and up to 150ºC range – the PHE has no equal in a wide range of industrial applications. Where PHE is particularly effective is in liquid to liquid heat transfer where the PHE's extensive heat transfer surface and capability of keeping the liquids in a state of turbulence make high recovery possible even at temperature approaches as low as 1ºC. The practical limit for a tubular exchanger is approximately 5ºC. The PHE can achieve 97% heat recovery versus the 50% economically feasible with the tubular. The extraordinary flexibility of our PHE makes it adaptable to a wide range of applications. And the adaptability remains a permanent feature - the PHE is not dedicated to a single process. The number of plates in a frame can be enlarged or reduced, flow patterns can be changed, heat transfer and pressure drop can be precisely regulated by using plates with thermally long or short corrugations. In short, the PHE is a piece of precision machinery that can be easily adjusted to meet specific process requirements. Experimental Objective — The goal of this experiment is to learn how PHE works in the actual and be able to determine the effect of volumetric flowrate on the rate of heat transfer Procedure The work is carried out on a plate heat exchanger, through which hot water and cold water flow countercurrently. Water flowrates are measured using flow indicators - the cold water flowrate is measured using a rotameter (units are gallons per hour, gph). Rotameter readings are taken across the top of the float. Temperature sensors measure the water temperatures at the inlets and outlets of the heat exchanger and display this data on a computer. 1- Turn both water flows full on for a few minutes to remove air from the system. Set the hot water flowrate at approximately 6.0 litres/min and maintain this value throughout the experiment. Fix a desired flowrate of cold water and allow the system to reach steady state, (when outlet temperatures no longer vary). 2- Measure the cold water inlet temperature, Tc in ; the cold water outlet temperature, Tc out ; and the cold water flowrate through the plate heat exchanger, Vflow. 3- Carry out the procedure for seven different cold water flowrates over a wide range of flowrates between 120 gph and 30 gph, keeping the flowrate of the hot water constant throughout. NOTE: For each run keep checking the flowrates to make sure they stay constant, and ensure steady state has been reached (steady outlet temperatures) before taking readings. Estimate the precision of your readings for Tc in , Tc out and Vflow. Thus, the faster the rate of volumetric flow, the more materials are made to pass carrying heat to be transferred within the heat exchanger which implies further efficiency for the system in exchanging more heat between the hot fluid and the cold fluid water. Discussion Compressed plates are framed together such that the system allows parallel flow along the channels in which hot and cold fluids in passage alternate in location during heat transfer and this was the PHE setting we used to heat the cold water to the temperature intended. For seven different flowrates – 30 gph, 45 gph, 60 gph, 75, gph, 90 gph, 105 gph, and 120 gph, we managed to monitor the heating progress under steady state condition at 119 seconds, 154 seconds, 187 seconds, 146 seconds, 161 seconds, 146 seconds, and 148 seconds, respectively. Our readings of Tc (in) and Tc (out) at steady-state enabled the group to consider estimating for the precision of both the recording we made and the measuring device in application. We figured out being precise to the extent of obtaining a slight error from the mean each of the inlet and the out temperatures for the cold water. Steady-state temperatures in each time span could be held constant to a certain degree on account of limitations in the system which could have dissipated small amounts of energy in the process. Hence, for a particular flowrate, we had observed insignificant variations within each set of readings for Tc (in) and Tc (out). From 30 gph until we reached the 120 gph trial, there emerged standard deviations from Tc (in) mean of 0.061772, 0.183917, 0.131703, 0.100941, 0.050477, 0.067766, and 0.062234. Likewise, from the Tc (out) mean came out standard deviations of 0.064693, 0.592873, 0.459652, 0.497697, 0.414065, 0.658466, and 0.326468, correspondingly. Conclusion After the necessary calculations applied on the experimental observations we kept track of, the smooth curve generated showing the rate of heat transfer in Joules/sec as a function of the volumetric flowrate in m3/sec, gives us clear insight and comprehension into fulfilling the main objective of the experiment. The graph demonstrates that increasing the volumetric rate of flow of the cold fluid would result to a faster rate of heat exchange across the channel walls through which the cold and hot fluids passed parallel with each other. Thus, if one hopes to make adjustments with the heat transfer speed at any time, he may do so indirectly by operating to change the Vflow factor.
